SENATE PRAYER: Thought you might enjoy this interesting prayer given in Kansas at the
opening session of their Senate. It seems prayer still upsets some people.

When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone
was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your
direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe to those who call evil good" but
that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed
our values. We confess that.

We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism; We have
worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism; We have endorsed perversion and
called it alternative lifestyle; We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery;
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare; We have killed our unborn and called
it choice; We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable; We have neglected to
discipline our children and called it building self esteem; We have abused power and
called it politics; We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition;
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of
expression; We have ridiculed the time honored values of our forefathers and called it
enlightenment.

Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us
free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent to direct us to the center
of Your will, to openly ask it in the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus
Christ. Amen"

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in
protest. In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged
more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The
church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India,
Africa, and Korea.

Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on "The Rest of the Story" on the radio and
received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired. With the
Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so
that we again can be called one nation under God.

We were never one nation under "god." We are a nation that respects the separation
between church and state, and shocking as it may be to you, there are MANY of us who do
not believe in a supernatural deity referred to as god. Does that mean that we are not
decent, hard-working and compassionate human beings, every bit as tolerant and patriotic
as yourselves? We just don't want your beliefs foisted upon us and choose not to do the
same to you.

I read every word in your post. What's your point? Enlighten me please. What does it have
to do with this newsgroup?? How is it related to immigration issues? Or you just want to
find whatever way to preach your beliefs? I don't agree with what you wrote but I respect
you to have your every right to choose your views on God. PLEASE repsect others in return
and bring your irrelevant post to the place it belongs!

Hello,

This is a forum about immigration. Please go somewhere else to preach your religious
views. As a Pagan, I find the minister's prayer highly offensive. And I find you preaching
here just as offensive. I would never put my spiritual views on this forum. It is not for
that. BTW, the majority of the world is not Christian. Don't get me wrong. I have a lot of
respect for Christians who respect that others have different ways.

Pardon me for jumping in like this, but I would like to challenge a few points of history
that have been asserted here. Before I get censured, let me state that my comments relate
to the popularity of the United States as a destination for immigration. And for the
record, I am Canadian and I am seeking to immigrate to the US.

The framers of the Declaration of Independance saw it fitting to acknowledge "Nature's
God" at the very outset of the document and to state that the Rights that they were
seeking to protect were "endowed by their Creator" as "inalienable".

The Pledge of Allegiance was amended in House Joint Resolution 243 in 1954 under President
Eisenhower to amend the clause "one nation" to include "under God", stating: "In this way
we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future;
in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be
our country's most powerful resource in peace and war."

Check out the US coins and currency in your wallets. All will contain the phrase "In God
We Trust".

Whether or not it is the current popular view, the United States of America is a nation
that was founded, at least in part, on a belief in God.

The intent of the doctrine of the Separation of Church and State (1st and 10th amendments)
was not the irradication of this foundation of faith. It purpose was to protect
"communities of faith" from interference by the government.

It is my belief that the power, prestige and prosperity the US currently enjoys is due to
this vision by the founding fathers. Whether or not this prosperity continues may depend
on whether we/they continue to ridicule "the time honored values of our forefathers and
called it enlightenment", as the good minister puts it.

Brian.
