We get friday off only (as a paid holiday)

We generally get the day after Thanksgiving off as an extra day

If we don't get some more work coming in soon, I'll be on one long UNPAID holiday

Yikes, I just came back from eating in the Cafeteria provided by one of the large companies in our office building. They are closing down their offices and the cafeteria starting tonight and won't reopen until Tuesday morning. So their workers will be off Thursday, Friday and Monday, with pay.

Actually I thought that was against the law. I was lead to believe that if the holiday falls on Saturday, you were entitled to a paid holiday on Friday and if it falls on Sunday, then it was a paid holiday on Monday. Of course this does not pertain to the retail industry. For those employees I thought they were double time for working on a holiday. I know back when I was 16 I was paid double when I worked for F.W. Woolworth's.

If you fell face down in a cow pat you'd come up smelling of roses.

Good for you IP or should I say good for Mrs IP? Hope it's all going well for you.

I suspect it varies from state to state, but in some areas, the employers aren't required to give holidays off at all - it's at their discretion. Most will give their employees the major holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, July 4 etc, but when it comes to the minor ones, President's Day, MLK Day and so on, most private companies don't honor them. For those who do work, time and a half is common.

At my first job in this country they used to ask for volunteers to work the holidays. My boss could never understand why I never volunteered even though I explained repeatedly that getting a day off and being paid for a full day was a better deal than working 8 hours for 1/2 as much more.

Doesn't really make a difference...I work remotely...my daily commute is as long as it takes me to get from my bed in my pj's to my laptop...

I work for a big bank and we don't get Friday or Monday off! Seems a bit cheap to me

I work at a university and most staff have Friday off with pay, myself included.

That said, I'm still getting used to this practice of holidays being observed on Fridays. I don't know when it changed, but for as long as I could remember, a holiday that fell on Saturday and Sunday was always observed on the following Monday. I liked it that way, it was more consistent.

Really? I always thought the banks got more holidays than anyone else.

Also missed the "No employer, both days off, no pay for either" option as well.
