A 737 in Florida ends up in the drink, and an Aeroflot plane lands ablaze, they were a couple of close squeaks, that could have been a while lot worse than they ended up.

The Russian incident does have casualties. At least 2 dead so far. **edit** and rising unfortunately.
Those 2 incidents just go to show that in modern aviation, if the crew get the plane back down on the ground, there’s a very high chance you will walk away. Something I tell my mother every time she’s about to board the flight to come out and visit, but she still spends the 10 and a half hours ******** herself LOL.
We have our triennial drill on Tuesday where we simulate a aircraft crash. It will be interesting to see just how all the agencies come together to deal with it.

13 dead incl 2 children. It seems like they should have seen this one coming in, and had foam all over it as soon as it stopped, but that didn't happen.
Edit: Here's video of the landing, and the fire starting - looks like they didn't have a chance. Another article says the crew declared an emergency before landing, and the fire trucks were on the scene in less than 2 minutes, but that's an eternity in a situation like that.

It’s an eternity when your in the plane, but it’s within response time. The CAA (or probably EASA now) response time is 2 minutes. The FAA time is 3 minutes. I presume the Russians have similar times. Although as you say, if the emergency was declared before, you would have expected the ARFF vehicles to be standing by alongside the runway.

I wonder if its time to start locked overhead bins during landing and take off only having them available during cruise. Seems most of the time during an evacuation people are bringing their bags with them, which slows the evacuation down and could lead to lives lost.

Agreed, but it is also time to stop people hauling so much crap into the cabin anyway. I am surprised that the FAA hasn't long since cut down on the "carry on" allowance. IMO it should be "two personal items" only i.e. handbag and a computer bag, sized accordingly, so something like 18" × 12" × 4", and no overcoats packed full of crap either!
People also tend to over pack, I cannot believe the amount of stuff people will take even for a week long trip. I just went away to Texas for a week, only took my back pack, could fit a weeks of clothes in it no issue.
