Waiting at a red light. First car in line is not moving, I'm third in line. The car between us keeps edging forward every few seconds, there's no chance of the light changing since it only just turned red. No one else is moving. Why do people do that?

They're driving automatics and aren't taught to use the handbrake while waiting at a light. An auto automatically creeps if you take your foot off the brake.

In fact the hand brake on my car doesn't really work and the recall was only for the manual version.

Most automatics don't even have a handbrake, just an e-brake. I've used mine maybe once and almost couldn't workout how to turn it off (pushed it but the light stayed on).

Most cars, manuals and automatics, in Europe just have e-brakes now. It is slowly becoming the norm in the US. Always behind.

My truck doesn't have a handbrake, just a locking foot pedal brake. It made relearning to do hill starts interesting.

How do you deal with that in a manual? I got taught how to drive an automatic with two feet which made my life a lot easier.

You learn excellent clutch control and how to move your feet very quickly. .... It is entirely reflex now.

Last two cars I've had have both had the cool 'hill start' feature, where they apply brakes when you brake on a hill, and retain the braking effect even when you take your foot off to use the gas. Works perfectly. Haven't had to use the 'handbrake' (or 'footbrake') in years.

I turned that off on mine because I was getting through rear disk pads too quickly

Mini JCW and I dunno... Have to go look.

It would explain why I go through rears faster than fronts though.
