How many checks do you write (non business) per month. With debit cards and automatic payments they have become nearly extinct.

I am down to 3 per month. I guess my last buy of 100 will last awhile.

Less than one a month. About the only regular payment we can't do electronically is the quarterly water bill from the village. Then there's occasionals, cat feeder when we're away, wifey just sent a check to her cousin for her bridal shower, etc.

But back in the UK before we moved I don't think we'd written any cheques in years.

At the moment one per week, for little Miss P's summer camp (this week's was the last week). Otherwise we don't write many, maybe a couple a month, for odd things like AC service or termite treatment.

We don't use a debit card for anything, in fact we don't even have debit cards.

Very very few, maybe 1 a month for the kids violin teacher that's about it.

One, to the village for our sewer/water/refuse bill and that's only because we keep forgetting we can pay it on their website.

It used to be one a week for daycare, but they switched to direct debit a while ago so we barely have to write checks at all now.

Zero. I try to use my credit card wherever possible to rack up air miles.

How do you withdraw money from an ATM without a debit card? Do you just have a cashcard instead?

A couple a month, for Little Kims dance classes and many associated extra expenses that the dance studio dreams up on a regular basis.
I sometimes punish them by bringing cash.

We have ATM cards. The sixteen digit numbers on them aren't raised.

We returned our debit cards and insisted on ATM cards after the second time that a fraudulent debit card transaction was posted to our current account. The fraudulent transactions rather stood out because we never used our debit cards as debit cards. One I recall was someone charging their Direct TV to our account, which given that you need an address for Direct TV service, wasn't the smartest thing to do!

I am often surprised by the number of places that still require checks here.

The latest is the before and after school programs run by the (very large) school district, but there are plenty of others.

My suspicion is that the for many of these places, the percentage demanded by the credit card companies is simply too high, and they are not willing to lose that amount of money.

I think I write about a dozen checks a year, mostly for charitable contributions.

1 per month for rent.

The bank provides them free with my banking package, so at least don't have to buy them anymore.


We can pay rent by debit if we go to the main office downtown, but it's just easier to write a check and drop it off at the local office located on site.


Everything else is paid online, via virtual Visa debit from the checking account, or auto withdrawal.


We also receive 2 cheques per month from my wife's employer, they don't do automatic deposit but the bank just started offering photo deposit, so now no need to go to the bank at least for it.
