Pandemic Burnout

Has anyone been suffering from this? If it's even really a thing.

I consider myself a strong willed person, but recently it has seemed like 'one thing after another' and I find myself seriously considering a career change.

Even though I am not frontline healthcare, just being in the industry even tangentially is just so fatiguing. The rules constantly changing, dealing with death and serious long term illness, long hours, staff turnover.

Perhaps it's simply because of the holidays, and I will enter 2022 with new vigor, but right now every day is a struggle. First world problems, I know. I'm alive, I'm healthy, no one in my family has died, but it's beginning to take a toll.

I live in a Republican, Trumpy area and was quite surprised to see (approx) 90% compliance with the new NY mask mandate when it was introduced last week, on indoor public areas such as stores. I assume everyone already owns the masks, they thought “no big deal,” and complied. The few people who aren’t wearing them are dim-witted old men, mostly.

For me, it's more frustration at the unmasked, unvaxed crowd rather than actual burnout.

Me too.
Although, as I've said before, my household has it pretty easy.
Mother in law and me retired so no income to be interrupted, stepson doesn't work so no interruption there either ;)
Stepdaughter has the misfortune to work in retail and has added responsibility for ensuring mask compliance. Our province handled it well from the start so once the initial lockdown was over, her store (household stuff) has been open continuously.

Not that much adjustment really, although we do miss eating out and a couple of beers that go with that.. Meal delivery doesn't really work.

I guess it's more dependent on whatever industry you are in. I don't think I would feel this way if I worded in, i don't know, an attorneys office or something.

Very fatigued by the uncertainty and the travel restrictions. I saw a news feature on this topic the other day and they termed it "languishing" although in healthcare/retail/etc it may well be "burn out".

Getting my booster today. Done with the masks since omnicron is here. I'll take my chances and live life.

I had burnout by about March last year! It does seem to just be an endless cycle right now. I’ve pretty much stopped watching the news (especially over here where it’s just blatant propaganda for either the left or right depending on what your watching). It is getting difficult to know just what to believe right now. However, my grandparents probably spent years in a gas mask. Wearing a cloth mask is hardly a big hardship, so I’ll continue to do it.

I still watch the news here or rather listen. Mostly because i'll never get over how opinion pieces are accepted as 'news'. As for burnout, I felt it last year when I realised this isn't getting sorted out anytime soon. How is Monterey for the anti vaxxers/maskers? We had a bunch of people storm trader joes here in santa cruz. just ran in with no masks, grabbed a bunch of stuff and threw some money at the cashier before running out. Felt so sorry for the staff, shop workers have had to put up with so much crap in the last 2 years.

I've seen similar clips to what you described and were disgusted. Appeared to be hypocrites who profess to believe in personal rights and private property, yet don't when it suites them.

That said I have also seen people shame others who weren't locking down and "flattening the curve", only to go out and join a mass protest shoulder to shoulder with thousands of people.

See, it’s shit like that that really boils my piss, and just adds to the burnout. I really don’t care if people chose not to get vaccinated. Their body, their choice, and they live the consequences if anything happens. But you don’t need to tell anyone that will listen about it FFS!!!! I tell you, if ever there was a Third World War, western countries would be ****ed!!!!
I’m surprised to hear that about Santa Cruz. I would have thought that was more likely to happen down here. On the whole, people down here in Monterey seem to be fairly good about mask wearing. I haven’t heard or seen any altercations over it.

Do you feel the same way about driving while drunk, their body, their car, their choice ?

Thats exactly how I feel. Wore masks early on whenever out in public but now everyone has had a chance to get vaccinated. Only wear a mask now when required. The unvaccinated can take their chances as they choose.
