how some of you chose your usernames/nicnames. There are some odd/unusual ones !! Mines simple - It's my name ;o) Good luck to all and keep "asking away" Roger |
Re: OT - users names.
My user name comes from smarties chocolate in UK. There was a really colourful ad on tv one time and I loved it, so I have used smartie ever since for e-mail and user names. Of course, I am also ridiculously smart!! (ya ha ha if it was only true I would have never decided to mess with the INS!) The girl is because, well, I am a girl! And the 88 is from the number 8 being lucky for Chinese people.....
So there you go :) |
Re: OT - users names.
I used to travel extensively (Business) and one of the places I frequented very often
was Atlanta and the surrounding area. The people I met there would kiddingly refer to me as "li'l Fish" because if you say you want a bucket of my Last name in any Bait and Tackle shop you will get a bucket of Minnows. I needed an Internet Nick quickly and having just returned from Atlanta.............. John & Deb Can/Am '98 |
Re: OT - users names.
Here on the NG I use my legitimate nickname which was given to me by friends when I was just a little tyke. Like Rita is a long and complicated name to say so they had to shorten it. I was known as Ri or Rete.
But online my chat name and name used for other internet activities is Whatgives. It is an expression from my generation and is a great ice breaker when you want to get someone to start talking, particularly about themselves. For the NG, I didn't want to hide behind a nick as I feel that if I were brave enough to venture an answer to someone's question, than I should stand up and allow others to know me as a person rather than as a catchy nick. That was my feeling at least. I also always let my real e-mail addy be known until someone on the NG decided that flooding me with hate mail and viruses was the kick of the lifetime for them. Rete a/k/a Rita a/k/a The BITCH a/k/a Queen Mother of Nag a/k/a Whatgives |

Re: OT - users names.
I have played roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons and more recently the
online games for several years. When I was looking for a character name a jewish friend of mind told me that Morkai was the wolf who guarded the gates of hel in the hebrew mythos. Wether this is true or not I have never been able to verify but I liked the name and the wolf has long been a totem animal of mine. Its connection to a character in a R.A Salvatore novel was purely coincidence. I had read the book but didn't remember the character untill someone mentioned it and I went back and checked. Kurst is the surname my partner has always used for his main character and when our characters got married ingame (awwww :) I took on Kurst as Morkai's surname. I've been using the name for about 5 years on the net now and the character long ago became an extension of me, being the honorable warrior that has always been a part of my soul. Such that most of my friends call me Morkai (or Morky) these days instead of Victoria. I never really liked my real name anyhow, always brings back memories of childhood, I only ever got called Victoria when I had done something wrong and was being yelled at :) The only downside is that so many people think I'm male. When I was playing online text adventures (muds) people would be shocked to find out I was actually female.. Even the reply I got back from a programming company recently when I enquired about one of their products was headed Dear Mr Kurst. Re: OT - users names.
I always used to use 'Mister Heartbreak' online and in newsgroup posts, because
it's the title of a Laurie Anderson CD that I liked very much (nothing to do with my romantic involvements, I can assure you - although a lot of people in chatrooms used to ask "How many hearts have you broken today?" or "Are you going to break my heart?"). Dave. |
Re: OT - users names.
my current nick is actually kinda stolen, though for the first few years I was online
I went by "brunette" (and still do in some corners of the net, mainly on smartasses.org) ...my husband has been using the nick "Blackross" (originally from a comic book) for about 10 years. several years ago, one of his friends started calling him Dr. Blackross because of all the useless stuff he knew/knows, and because of how fast he picks up on stuff. When I met hubby online, that's how I knew him. always called him "Doc" and we were close friends. After we met (in RL) and were just starting to "date", he dared me to join his favourite chat room as "Mrs_Blackross". I guess they all knew him as some great bachelor, and they got a kick out of "the doc" having a "mrs". The name stuck, so I kept it. I don't really like my real name anyways. |

Re: OT - users names.
My current name is of course, my real name. However, I run a few websites and I'm a
chat administrator for a graphical chat called "Wolfhome". My wife and are are big Tolkien fans, so naturally one day we picked up the Simillarion (spelling?) and came up with an "elvish" name: Ethuil which means "North" (In canada, up north, just figured it fit, LOL). Ethuil is the name I used on Google, and on most of my online chats. :) P.S. Canmerican -> My wife and friends started dubbing me an "Americandian" as well, same thing, different slant to it :-P -Ev |
Re: OT - users names.
Whoops. Spelling mistake "Americandian" should be "Americanadian" :-P

Re: OT - users names.
Tara is the Buddhist goddess of compassion. i am merely tara.
The myth of the White Tara began when she showed up as the tear of Avalokiteshvara, also known as Chenzereng, who the Dali Lama is a reincarnation of. She appeared when Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of all Buddhas, moved into a state of compassion~~~when his mind and his heart met in wisdom~~~ and the suffering he saw because the the lack of this balance, made him cry. Then he could see Her~~~or it is said she appeared. That is who Tara is, the compassion expressed in that tear. The tear cleared the eye to see her, and She became the expression of compassion. There are innumerable manifestations of Tara, as many as beings require, but her most famous are the peaceful White Tara, who brings protection, long life and peace; and the dynamic Green Tara, who overcomes obstacles and saves beings in dangerous situations." To Tara, compassion differs slightly from love. Love wants others to be happy, while compassion wants them to not have pain, problems or unhappiness. Love comes from appreciating others' kindness, or just respecting them as fellow beings, whereas compassion comes from realizing that they suffer. Tara's vowed to remain in female form until all living beings attain enlightenment (or obtain visa's). Photos of tara's journey's http://photos.yahoo.com/judithanab The album "tara's photo's" is open...do a slide show. |
Re: OT - users names.
Mine is just my first name and initial of my surname.
I do have some other names which I go by in chat and stuff sometimes, but like Rete, I figure that if I am going to be talking to people and asking/answering questions I don't feel the need to hide anything. Rick |

I'm also a software tester and do a lot of work with data, so it's not just a name it's a job title. I've been using it for probably about 7 or 8 years now. When I first went online (in the early 80s) I was "Technobrat." That name came from a biography of George Lucas. It's the word he used to describe the kids that were the special effects department when they were making Empire Strikes Back. Ian is Kittiboi because he's very catlike in his mannerisms and attitudes. And because in one of the first pictures I took of him, he's sitting on the sofa wearing a winter hat I have -- a polar fleece cap with cat ears on it (and he's wearing clothes as well, thankyouverymuch!) ;p I started calling him catboy and it eventually turned into Kittiboi. And stuck. |

Re: OT - users names.
Mine is from a fantasy series by Melanie Rawn. I didn't want to pick a major character, and those names were registered on my chat anyway, so I picked a minor character. It's not See-Oh-Nayva...it's Sh-Nayva. I also go by Siokalle-same root, but kalle is derived from my real name, Heidi...means the same in Quenya (my fiance is a translator and is fascinated by Tolkien's languages--Quenya is an Elvish language).
Yes, very weird and geeky--but what do you expect from someone who met her fiance online?! My fiance is Targaff, who's posted a couple of times...dunno where he got his name. -Heidi |

Re: OT - users names.
My real name is Joanne, however I perfer Jo. Jo was already taken in this NG, so I added the first initial of my NEW surname as well. I added the underscore because I didn't want to be called JoB.. lol I also didn't want to put my full surname, as I get teased at work as it is that my new name sounds more like a porn star name

Re: OT - users names.
Great Thread - I'm enjoying reading it!
For me, it's a simple thing really. Though slightly bizarre as it has to do with an ex I almost married rather than the wonderful man I did marry. My name is Betsy (a name already used on this group, I later learned...) and I used to sign letters with my name, but then extend the y to a line below my name and put a star at the end. When I would email with my ex, I used to sign the emails B*, reminiscent of that. He, being a partical accelerator physicist, read that as "Betastar", which is something relevant to his field. (Better than "Beast-ar", I guess ;) ) And so about 10 years ago, my internic became "Betastar", or, for short, often just "Star" Thus the evolution of my name from Betsy to Betastar. Betastar aka Betsy |
Re: OT - users names.

Re: OT - users names.
Well, our username is pretty straightforward -- I'm Jenney and he's Mark!! :)
Mark's a frequent newsgroup poster, and usually uses his real name (Mark Stevens) on newsgroup messages. (I am not as brave as he is to use my full name online, just stopping with my first name, Jenney.) But he also sometimes uses Sonance, which means "sound." In fact, that's the username he had on the dating site where we met. I have two online usernames. The first is Neatdesign, which was my username on same said dating site. I came up with it a few years ago as a graphic design student. At the time, I wanted an email address which would convey that I was a designer, and would be a good name for a potential website and/or design firm. It occurred to me that the word "neat" has a double meaning -- "interesting/fun" and "clean/precise" -- both of which are important elements of good design. Hence, Neatdesign. (I sometimes have to use Neatdesign72 -- as in 1972, the year I was born -- if Neatdesign is already taken.) My second username is Andelina which, oddly enough, is my dog's name! :) That name has a story, too. My ex and I adopted her while living as expats in Santiago, Chile. After much debate we decided on Andie, in honor of the Andes Mountains which dominated the Santiago skyline. The name Andie got lengthened to Andelina, which just sounded prettier and more feminine for our canine princess. I never saw the name anywhere else and thought, "Hey, this is a good name to use online!" In setting up an account for this forum, simplicity seemed to be in order, since it was a "joint account" of sorts -- so, it's just "Jenney & Mark". ~ Jenney |
Re: OT - users names.
mrpilock happened by accident a friend came round to my house to setup aol on my computer many years ago and i tried to think of all the screen names that refered to me and they were all gone and he said stop being a pilock and typed in pilock and entered it and it accepted it and after calling him a few expletives i decided that i had to live with it.
I guess it was a good thing because its what attracted debs to me as she was curious what pilock meant and there the relationship started that led to my marriage to her. And so now we are mrpilock & mrspilock Kind regards Keith & Debs |

Re: OT - users names.
Well, Christine is my name and the 1438 came about when I was signing up for the New York Times online and Christine was taken, this was what was suggested and I kept it.
I used to use beastiefan (still my email addy), because I am a fan of the Beastie Boys, but beastiefan seems to take on a different meaning to some perverted people, lol. I also use Meri Mano, meaning "my kitten" in Urdu, my husband starting calling me that when I was visiting in his country and he was teaching me his language. |
Re: OT - users names.
My name comes from the term of endearment, rather the term of address, here in Baltimore (Bawlamer to the locals), "hon". Practically everyone gets called "hon". My first name is "Beth", hence the msb. Since these kinds of forums never let you register with commas and such, (Reads as "Miz B, hon") it morphed into ms_bhon.
I also post on the Lonely Planet (the guidebook has a wonderful website with bulletin boards on travel, politics, culture, food, and everything else at http://www.lonelyplanet.com - click on the "thorn tree"). I use that as my "handle" there as well. To keep people from adressing me as ms_bohn, I added "That's Miz B, hon!" to my sig line. Mine comes from a time when I was trying to register for an online service, and every time I picked a username, it was not available.
After about 20 tries, I yelled out (in frustration) "I can't think, dammit!!" My wife tells me she saw a light bulb pop on top my of head :) |
She'll probably kill me for this, so if you don't hear from me, you'll know why !
My nickname for my wife is PandaBird. I "met her" on the internet 18 months ago, and we met a month afterwards (at Heathrow Airport) and "just knew" The first photo she sent me she was wearing sun glasses (hence the panda) and she's a "bird" (London expression) RIP Roger |
