Been here 6 years now...
I still feel like I'm doing something I shouldn't when I turn right on a red stop light. My daughter, when she comes to visit, is still horrified at U-turns...here it's a way of getting to the stuff over the road....to her, it's illegal!! |

I find I'm relaxing more as time goes on but hey, if there's no sign saying I can't, then let's go for it! I remember trying to get to a CVS when I first arrived. I approached the damn building from three different directions, going around blocks that were a mile each side, just trying to get in the bloody car park. Each time there were central reservations preventing direct access. Eventually I approached it in the right direction - but the solution was simply to do a legal U-turn at the traffic lights! I've since learnt that most places are quite cleverly designed to be approachable from different directions, albeit in different ways. Those central turn lanes still make me nervous but are great for pulling out into a busy four-lane (plus middle turn lane) highway. I have to think when turning left in a left filter lane what the green light is telling me. I think a green arrow means there'll be no oncoming traffic, whereas a green disc means there will be...? And the wife has only burst one tyre so far by taking a right turn somewhat closer to the curb than she should have done. :) Still can't work out school zones. Fair enough if it's 8am/3pm or whatever and lots of young kids around. Not so obvious if there are older teens hanging around at 4:30pm. Around here the speed limit past all three schools that I regularly pass is 45mph, with 25mph in the school zone, so it's a huge difference. Well, that was a ramble! |

I'm like a tennis spectator when I do a right turn on red. Firstly to check for any sneakily hidden signs forbidding it, next to check for pedestrians, then where the traffic is coming from that might turn into that road, and then all over again just in case. And I still sometimes nearly miss the stuff coming from the opposite direction turning left on a (presumably) green arrow.

I get nervous with school buses... the fact that I have to stop when they're stopped across the road....
I suppose it makes sense... but I'm always scared that I'll forget!!! |

I suppose it makes sense... but I'm always scared that I'll forget!!! Incidentally, what's the position on going through a red light to let an emergency vehicle behind you pass? Apparently in the UK you can still be fined for doing so, no matter whether the ambulance with the dying patient needs to get past. |

Oh yeah, and pulling over for emergency vehicles. I got criticised for not stopping for one three lanes away in the opposite direction and clearly not going anywhere near where I was going. Still, that's the law, but it's hard to change your ways.

He was on my right and I wasn't blocking his path - pulling to the right IMO was dangerous and completely unnecessary. My wife (USC) had a go at me for not pulling all the way over. I thought that common sense would prevail that it would have been more dangerous to pull in front of an emergency vehicle than stay out of the way! |
