Oh no Valentines.....

Re: Oh no Valentines.....
I regard it as a positive sign that as the various 'chocolate' and greeting card industries step up the efforts to persuade us that Valentines Day is special...our local Hallmark store has just closed down. Maybe, just maybe, the world is beginning to wise up?
Okay...it's still early enough on Monday for some optimism...

Haven't bothered with Valentine's for years, not since the kids were small. Then it was an excuse for craft time with the kids. I still have one of the massive cards we made together in my old portfolio.
It is my sister's birthday on the 14th and everyone thinks its must be great but its not really as everyone forgets its her birthday because they are too obsessed with Valentine's day.

However, two (married or otherwise) people in the mid-30s gushing over each other on the internet and buying gifts and making empty gestures is bad and they should feel bad.
My daughter's birthday is on the 16th anyway, so I just focus on that. It's more fun anyway, you get to go bowling and have pizza at a kid's birthday
The Inbetweeners episode about valentines day was funny though.

I dislike the cards and gift wrap industry in general. Bought a cheap toy for the niece, $15, plus $5 for a sodding paper bag. I don't do cards at all these days.

Re: Oh no Valentines.....
Mr PF is a miserable old git when it comes to Valentines...
I should've seen it coming the first year we started going out when his mate told him he really ought to buy me some perfume or something.....
If I'm lucky, I'll get a card he bought in the garage on the way home and scribbled "guess who xx" on the bottom. Last year he was put under a load of pressure from the kids because we'd recently moved to the land of Valentine madness aka USA. So I got flowers, a card and dinner - at a Thai restaurant that had given out "buy one get one free" meal vouchers and it was bring your own bottle. Food was awful and the place was empty. The kids groaned "oh daaaad! " and laughed til they cried....
This year I've bought the kids cards and told them we're going to do loads of silly funny valentines stuff all day. Hubby is looking relieved and let off the hook...
Is it just Englishmen? My french pals used to go out and buy super sexy underwear ready for valentines...

Actually, we haven't bothered about it for years. Lucky for OH, I'm the most unromantic person you will ever meet. We don't even "do" anniversary's. I never remember dates.
I do make a big deal out of birthdays though. And I've learned that I have to be very detailed with what I want.
So if Valentines is important to you - tell him and be detailed about what you want. (my friend actually printed out a MAP for her husband to the jewelry store, then printed out a picture of the bracelet she wanted, item number and all. He sent his assistant for it - BUT she got her bracelet)
What's still weird to me - when a total stranger says "Happy Valentines Day"...

I tend to just buy the wife chocolates though this year my 6 year old has insisted that he take his mother out on a date and has begrudgingly agreed to allow me and his little sisters to tag along, which is nice considering he expects me to pay for it and chauffeur them around. He asked Santa for a suit and tie for the occasion so he's all set.
The wife also pointed out some shoes and a dress she wanted so she's getting them and I'm getting a toaster that I've had my eye on and a new wedding band because I've got too fat for my old one

Well, I don't know about anyone else but in our lives we get so busy with, well, just life really that I think we tend to let the romantic side slip a bit. So, whilst I don't like the over-commercialisation of it all, I did quite like the way my french pals got a gleam in their eyes as they headed for the sexy lingerie shops.
I just regard it as an annual reminder that we are more than just mum and dad...

We've never bothered, I do remember one year though, when we lived in Holmfirth and got snowed in that day. We walked to a local pub, and had lunch, then went to another pub got gradually drunker and played pool. At some point, the white ball got stuck, so hubby lifted the end of the table up to jiggle the ball out, and the legs fell off that end of the table. He was left there trying to hold it, while I nearly pissed myself laughing.
This year we'll be in Maui for Valentine's Day. It could be romantic, if we didn't have a 12 year old in tow, who is insisting she wants to watch her mates in the National climbing comp. So it'll probably be a take out pizza in the room while watching TV .

We don't bother with Valentines. Our wedding anniversary is on the 19th Feb so we tend to just go out for a nice meal for that. Dont do anniversary gifts or anything though.

Guess she missed out on the news that sisters are doing it for themselves. If you want it, just get it!
