Similar...but we were paying approx $20K per year in NJ. Don’t think anyone in the UK pays any where near that amount. A big chunk of it goes towards the local school. If you want your kids to go to a good state school...property and property taxes are going to be expensive.

My daughter, as you know, has breast cancer and no healthcare insurance. That is not the cost of a single round of a double drug chemo treatment at her hospital. As of two weeks ago, her accumulated charges at the hospital for 6 chemo treatments plus the two drugs administered before each chemo treatment for nausea and something else, came to just under $60,000. She pays for each doctor's visit at the time of the visit and each of the diagnostic tests were done at a private lab, i.e. bone scans, MRI, etc. which she paid for out of pocket in full.
Because she has no healthcare, she went to private labs at the suggestion of the oncologist. In hospital testing for the MRI and bone scan would have been $5,800. At the private lab, the two tests were $1,500 total.
The hospital also has discounted all fees to less than 40% of the normal billing cost and the same for the doctor's visit.
She still has 9 more chemo treatments, one course of radiation and surgery before this is over.
She and her husband were told just send us all the bills you get and we will add them to the pile. We cannot, as a public hospital, deny you treatment nor give you treatment inconsistent with a patient with healthcare. They have set up a payment schedule with the hospital and pay monthly. At some point, the bill will go for collection, as the hospital advised them. At that point the collection agency will settle the already discounted bill for .50 to 25 cents on the dollar.
If they need to declare bankruptcy, so be it. If it is your life or your financial reputation, which do you think wins?
Thank you former President Obama for the shit healthcare bill you introduced and had passed. It wiped out this hardworking family of five from the healthcare system which they had before because of the increased premiums and higher deductibles.
