I never found over-time worth it. I used to trade shifts with people instead of picking up over-time when I worked in the US so it was paid straight time as I would end up with more money in my pocket.

Up here it's about the same, although I have not had employers wanting people to stay over and work over-time so over-time has always been a rarity.

Income tax wise though vs California, I come out a head up here, and the gov't sends us a sales tax rebate every 3 months.

I like that idea. Wont happen here though. Our Governor is handing out drivers licenses and all kinds of goodies to the illegals and people like my daughter are helping to fund it all

I had a summer job when I was a student, that was 40hrs base, but I used to work around 60-65 hours and was paid for 75-80hrs.

I was also working nights, which came with a 33% shift premium. The way the numbers worked out, the "shift premium" number was almost identical to the aggregate income and payroll tax deductions. I used to joke that I worked for my own benefit, but worked nights for the tax man!

Well I certainly messed up working out the estimated payments for 2105. Fortunately I well overpaid and got a massive rebate. Glad it wasn't an underpayment and I owed that amount.

I didn't know you could pay taxes 89 years in advance.

So how long does it generally take for the IRS to get a rebate check to you?

We filed a few weeks ago, just wondering when I should start making calls to find out what's going on.

If you've not munted it, it can be very quick to a few weeks. If you've messed something up and they have to correct it for you, can be a few weeks longer. I think we've had them back within a week once and longest about 6 weeks.

Thanks Bob. That's a lot quicker than I had originally imagined.

For our first year needing estimated quarterly payments I thought we did pretty well. Got fairly close, and only needing a few hundred back from the government. But because the payments were far from consistent in size we got a penalty fine*. Can't win.

* $6. Really?!?!

Ours took about ten days.

Not sure what modom was planning on spending it on but I've just blown 200 bucks of it on a new engine timing-belt kit for the car, I guess that's tomorrow morning's activity accounted for!

That is one of the pitfalls of estimated quarterly payments. You can get fined if you under pay over the year by more than $1000, and also if you under pay the quarterly payments. Not sure what underpayment quarterly triggers a fine. Oregon has state income tax so it is a double whammy if you get both wrong.
