New Costco credit card & Chip 'n' PIN

With our new costco visa card I am sometimes being asked for a PIN on the chip transactions. This does not happen at all retailers but has the last 2 times I tried using the card. It runs as credit without any problem. Are there any costco members that have experienced the same?

thanks for the info.
I'm a UK costco member, i wonder if it will be easy (enough) getting a costco cc in the US because of this, or if it will just be a conventional procesS? Thinking of amex uk vs us here.

Costco US uses citibank, recently changed from AMEX, so the answer is very probably no. However it's very easy to become a Costco member in the UK, you don't need a business.

Don't the banks do random pin transactions on the cards? I know my US debit card said in the paperwork that a pin might be asked to verify transactions.
My US chip card confuses stores in Canada since it has a chip but doesn't generally need a pin and then prints a receipt for a signature, the cards here are chip and pin, so cashiers dont expect a chip card to need a signature...

The PIN is for debit. If paying by credit, skip the PIN screen/request by simply keying the enter button. I think that it's Walmart that this has happened to me at least twice.

Funnily enough a friend was mentioning today that his new Costco credit card came without the pin on any of the letters.
He phoned up and they said they will send out a new letter.
Well, that letter turned up... Containing only instructions on how to change your pin... But you need to know the original pin!

the original PIN was buried in the text of a standard looking letter. The title of the letter was Welcome to your new card. It detailed your credit limit, the rewards structure and your PIN. It did not come as a separate item. on the letter is did say the PIN was only required for cash advances.
