I recently joined Amazon Prime to see what it's like...they offer some online movies and stuff. Haven't taken a very close look, but at quick glance I didn't see anything fabulous on there.

Also, my local cable provider (Cox) keeps sending me announcements that they have online streaming now on their website, so I'll have to check that out soon.

My problem is, I like really obscure stuff, especially foreign movies from Iran, Turkey, and Middle East in general. Most of the sites out there only have Hollywood-type current movies available, or TV shows that I never watch. That's why I picked Netflix, because they had such a wide selection of foreign films.

Re: Netflix

Netflix recently 'lost' the Starz content deal - which gives access to Spartacus and Camelot (which are both pants btw) and also Disney stuff like Toy Story 3; around 8% of their current inventory. I say 'lost' because a lot of people think it is a negotiating tactic as there is still 6 months left on the contract. It's likely though that Netflix will let them go and move on to negotiating directly with content providers rather than networks.

The one to watch could be Hulu Plus as it looks like Google will be buying them and throwing a ton of money at the brand. Looks like they could be the next big competitor to Netflix. However Amazon shouldn't be discounted as they are the owners of Lovefilm in the UK and have an increasing amount of stuff available to prime subscribers. Either way the online streaming market is hotting up and becoming more competitive which can only be a good thing.

Alternatively, you could just saw your own leg off with a rusty hacksaw blade. It'd be a pleasanter experience.

They lost it. It's not being renewed because Disney and Sony have exclusively signed up their online content else where. That's why this is such a fuss.

Not necessarily. I see it becoming more fragmented. With me back off to Newsgroup land. I want a one stop shop.

I know Iran has a number of good movie makers, but Turkey I do not know, the few things I have seen from Turkey have been pretty bad; so any recommendations, maybe in the movie thread would be appreciated.

It was pretty obvious that was going to happen. Netflix has been hurting the premium channels and Starz has recently put a large number of movies for on demand viewers on comcast cable to try to increase or at least maintain premium subscribers. Currently I now have over 100 HD Starz on demand movies available including about six in 3D at no additional cost.

If they continued to offer Starz through Netflix, why would people continue to subscribe to the Starz premium channel.

HBO has also boasted the number of on demand movies but not as agressively as Starz.

Good listing on the alternatives, now that Netflix are determined to go out of business with the spinning off of the DVD business, Qwikster? Seriously? What a load of kack.

We joined Amazon Prime and have watched some old Brit shows but you have to pay $79 up front and they don't have so many as Netflix yet to stream. Also not so keen on their search for movies/shows.

I am so mad at Netflix. They ruined such a good deal:sneaky:

Well now we know why. They're splitting off the DVD by mail service and calling it "Qwikster" Someone deserves a "Qwik" kick in the nads for that name alone.

It was a major screw up and suspect they wish they didn't split the DVD out of the streaming capability and causing a such a large price increase all at one time. I suspect the large price rise was probably being pushed by wall street to increase profits faster. Now they want to separate out the DVD part so that they will not be seen to be selling last years technology as people move away from DVDs but now subscribers with both DVD and streaming subscriptions are mad because they will have to go to two different sites to order videos.

Everything has gone wrong for Netflix and they keep making things worse. They will actually have about 600,000 fewer subscribers at the end of this month than at the end of June due to the muck up.
