Default Nascar - what am I letting myself in for...?

Staycation day 1 and I'm going to Nascar tomorrow. Never been before - any hints or tips? I'm going in the spirit of "give anything a go once" and it's local. I'm not particularly a big motor sports fan although I've been known to sit through the odd F1 race on the telly and I do watch Top Gear regularly.

So far, I have gleaned that I should take earplugs and wearing my TeamGB Limpix t-shirt may draw attention to me in perhaps not a good way. And finding my dark green Mini afterwards in a car park full of pick-up trucks could be a tad tricky in the dark.

Anything else...?

1. Wear a drinking helmet
http://www.amazon.com/Beer-Guzzler-H.../dp/B000QV9XDI
2. Wear a beer belt
http://www.amazon.com/Redneck-Pack-B...=pd_sim_misc_4
3. Fill 1 and 2 with Bud Light
4. Wear camo (If you can get 1 and 2 in camo you win bonus points)
5. Start chewing tobacco
6. Wear a sleeveless top
7. Get a mullet

Then you'll fit in fine.

If taking your wife/girlfriend she will need a pair of blue jean cutoffs (frayed) and some form of skimpy top, bra optional.

Good luck ! RIR have reportedly put a lot of effort into improving the car parking signage - although how you help a group of rednecks who are too drunk to even remember what their car (pick-up) looks like I don't know............

Think I'm going to park'n'ride, seems a better all-round bet. I'm more worried that truck drivers won't see my Mini and just drive over it in the dark...

Having said all of this, apparently there is an 80% chance of rain tonight and the prospect of the race being put off till tomorrow. What a bunch of wusses - don't they have wet tires?

I'll be so disappointed if it's delayed, apparently The Man Who Would Be President is due to come and address the crowd and start the race tonight......

Mind numbingly boring, I went to Darlington, I was never so glad to see a race finish.

Yes! With all the rain it felt positively British - just like previous trips of mine to Open Golf and Wimbledon. I got that cold, damp-to-the-bones feeling where the only thing that could warm you up is a nice cup of tea, but a distinct shortage of tea stalls....

The "gentlemen start your engines" and the noise of the start is very exciting, but after about 20 laps when the leader has lapped the driver at the back it does become a bit of a parade of cars. Without Murray Walker explaining what's going on, and not being a supporter of a particular driver or team, it is a bit repetitive. Was sitting opposite the pit lane, so had to wait for pit stops for something different to see.

By 11pm, the race was only a third of the way through and there was another rain delay so I called it quits and headed back. Was restarted by the time I walked in my front door at 11.40pm, so I turned on the tv and pottered about until I fell asleep at 1am on the sofa. No idea who won!

Glad I went, something to cross off my bucket list but I wouldn't be rushing to repeat the experience.

Parade? The last third of the race saw a tremendous drive by Jeff Gordon to go from about 17 to 2 to get into the Chase for the Championship.

All I meant was that if you're sitting there, only really ever having heard of Dale Earnhardt beforehand, one car/driver is very much like another. Especially when whizzing past you at 100mph.

The last third of the race was when I was semi-concious and not really paying attention.....
