Bats dart around very deftly without hitting a single person on their low flights. The stories of bats getting caught in hair are mostly hype, but it has happened, usually because a bat's echo-location was interfered with, or the person moved right at the last millisecond before the bat could correct.

The only bat you should fear is a bat that's on the ground in the open, not flying. Especially during the day. Those are the ones that could have rabies and should just be left alone. Report to animal control if you want.

I think it's more the fear of rabies than the fear of bats to be honest :o

Nothing wrong with fearing rabies. It's a nasty disease. Not all animals have/carry it, of course.
One rule wildlife-type-folks like me have: If it's a wild mammal, and it doesn't run from you, or actually comes toward you, don't mess with it. One stage of rabies makes them crazy and want to attack everything, and another stage makes them dumb and listless. If an animal isn't acting like you think it should act, give it a wide birth and let someone know.

.... Or go to Australia... they don't have rabies there. Yet. Just everything that moves can kill you, but no rabies. ;)

If you don't like deet, I've heard there's a lotion by avon that works, can't remember the name though. For treatment of the bites, there's a product called "After Bite" that contains ammonia, it works well.

Here are some other tips I found.
