You can effectively use Google Voice as a free long distance call service, using your home phone.

I think that would bug me personally, but good tip for others.

Getting free long distance calls bugs you?

I like the portability of the cell phone. Just not for me, but a good tip for others.

a) Google say it will be free forever. Of course they wouldn't run it forever without making money on it. They've already partered up with Verizon to sell Google Android phones. I reckon it's a pre-amble to a full cellphone service on Verizon's backbone, offering a fully integrated GV/cellphone service and some kind of profit sharing with Verizon.

b) We aren't talking about some small-fry company here....this is GOOGLE.

Size matters not.
Remember such leviathans, such as Barings Bank and more recently, Lehman Brothers.

I like GV's idea but its success will depend on how well they market it and so, I see zero above the line marketing effort on their part.

Well they bought it (Grand Central) for a price....so obviously they have plans to make money out of it somehow.

I don't see it going away.

In any case, why not just use it at least while it's free....what's to lose?

DH actually just added me to his ATT account - cost him only $30 for a LG xenon - with a slide out keyboard and touch screen - and just an extra 15-20$ a month (incl $5 for 200 texts). He came home with it and a new number for it - but i rang the customer service peeps at ATT and they actually ported my old number across later that day.

so thanks for all the help peeps but im sorted now.

Nice one - glad you got it sorted. Good to be able to keep your number as well!

I do the 200 texts for $5 for my son and it works out well - like most kids he texts his mates all the time!

Bit late now, but if you get the service your way, Virgin, Tracfone/Net10, singular etc have a $10 a month contract type deal, it's basically a payg phone and account you get, but then once set up you can opt to go contract on them.
