Know what you mean. In NZ any humour thats not below the trouser belt gets missed completely.

Luckily though I do get to watch re runs on UKTV.

Cheers

Go on the Lounge forum on here, it's about the closest you get to back home.

Hi Katya - Pretty settled at the moment. Had a spell in the US a few years ago and was never totally content back in the UK so NZ beckoned. Been here 5 years now and happy. Probs will come with the kids growing up - eldest is 19 and at Uni but as soon as he's finished will be back to the UK like a shot. Suspect his brother and sister will follow shortly after - then it will be crunch time for us. Do we follow the kids around or not? 64,000 dollar question.

Cheers
Martin

Hi Martin,

Where in the US did you live ?

Weve been here for 5 years as to be honest we would have loved to of checked out NZ or AU as well.
Not too sure about the non- culture here ( In Florida anyway)
Miss loads from the UK, apart from the weather and various immigration issue's. I.E National Heath Scroungers !

Might want to let them go back for a while before making a rash decision. Although Im sure your heart will let you know where you need to be for your kids, its definatley a hard one. Might need to ask the audience on that question, LOL !!

Would be ideal for me to spend 6 months on either side of the pond, best of both worlds !!

Regards
Katya

Lived in Utica, upstate new york. Hot humid summers and 6 months of freezing snow blowing off the lakes. Spent 2 years there and had a really good time. Revisited Canada a lot (lived there for 7 years as a kid), Niagara, NYC, East coast etc etc. Learnt to ski cause if you didn't the only alternative was hibernation. Was offered a perm job at the end but, to be honest, had had enough of the 'have a nice day' culture.

I miss silly things from the UK - the history, fields, ever changing scenery and I guess the comfortable feeling of belonging. In reality not sure I could ever go back but if the kids all ended up in the northern hemisphere would be tempted to settle in Spain or France.

Would love to spend Oct to Mar here and April to Sep in the UK/Europe. Trouble is costs more than I have.

Where abouts in the UK are you from? Why Florida?

Martin

Know EXCACTLY what you mean about the humour. Even after 4 years in NZ, we haven't learned to only make banana skin or toilet jokes, & get strange looks, or it goes over their heads... dont know which is worse, but we can laugh about it afterwards.

I guess we're just lucky to have original senses of humour !
My brother's thinking of moving to Florida next year - I'll have to warn him. He has an Extra Special sense of humour & might be commited :D

Re: Miss The Humour

Well, ended up in Florida as we were originally transfered out to Atlanta. Didnt like it there at all ( felt like I was living in a TV set of the stepford Wives). It was either transfer down to Florida or move back to the UK. So we thought we would give FL a go.

As time as gone on we have been relitivley happy here, my husband moreso than I.
I miss the culture of Europe the most and find it hard to relate to the other women here. The men are a bit more open to "different people" however it seems to freak the women out. They seem to find it hard to suss British women out, apart from congratulating me on my accient and picking up on any word that is discribed differently than their own. So I have 'surface' friends here, whereas back home I had true, solid friendships.

Cant grumble too much as the weather is good and its a nice outside life for my children, however even though Green Carded up, I often tell myself that I wouldnt chose to live here, of all the different places in the world. S'pose when the time is right ...we will move on. (as quite like seeing what's around corners, LOL !!)
