The Florida news is mostly leading with news about the weather today, plus this unpleasant report, [warning; this link to the written story also opens with a video report] of a man sentenced to life in prison for raping a disabled girl who was 13 at the time . It doesn't say exactly what her disabilities are but she is described as "non-verbal" and does not understand her relationship to her child, …. who suffers the same disabilities as his/her mother.

^^^ Delightful!

This is a great way of keeping the kids on their toes in the school canteen...

https://www.tampabay.com/news/public...hool-20190430/

And, probably deserving of the WTF thread, a quick search of 'resource officer's gun goes off in school' takes us all over the country, seems it's not uncommon.

How does a holstered weapon discharge?

What sort of gun was it? Surely not a single action revolver, and if it was a single/double action then some serious retraining on safe firearms handling procedures is goin to be required!

What sort of holster holds the gun in any direction other than pointing largely downwards?

So many questions!

9mm Sig Sauer, commonly used by law enforcement, loaded (goes without saying!) with no safety. Apparently there is quite a history of this model discharging when it feels like it! Having had all this explained to us it's being classified as an unauthorized discharge - God forbid we blame the manufacturers!

There are some great quotes in this article on Sig Sauer and some of the problems with Sig Sauer guns discharging accidently.

Such as: "The M17 is based on the P320, but it also includes a manual thumb safety. " So the version sold to the US Army has a thumb safety, but the version sold to law enforcement and the public apparently did (does?) not.

And: "The gunmaker concedes, however, that "recent events indicate that dropping the P320 beyond U.S. standards for safety may cause an unintentional discharge, " It seems a little careless of the officer to have dropped his weapon "beyond US standards for safety" and presumably he should be given remedial training so that in future he only drops his weapon within US standards for safety.

My limited understanding here: lots of popular handguns, most notably all Glocks (the best selling handguns in the US), are sold without any kind of dedicated safety. The value of a thumb safety in improving overall gun safety is highly debated among people who know guns. The majority of semi-automatic military handguns in the US (primarily the 1911, M9 and now the M17) have always had thumb safeties, perhaps it's a military requirement. Also, it's unclear if the Sig P320's former (and since fixed / recalled) accidental discharge issue would have been mitigated by the presence of a safety. Probably not, I'd guess. I think it was an issue with the striker assembly.

Dropping a gun is always, always, always a bad idea. Regardless, the bump-fire issue with the P320 was identified almost immediately upon release of the handgun and has been long since fixed. I think we have a perfect storm of bad luck here: unfixed handgun, idiot guard, school setting. Of course, "perfect storms" have a tendency to always occur.

One thing I'm shocked by: currently 43% of public schools have armed guards present. That certainly wasn't the case when I was a kid in the public school system. Things have changed.

Bit late to this but agree with Hiro11, the circumstances of this case were no doubt somewhat odd.

And a lot of things have changed since I was at school. can not imagine there is still a shooting range.

As this is the Florida thread we need to rejig your figure to 100% of Florida public schools!

...And despite the trained officer's gun discharging in its holster Florida lawmakers were undeterred and pressed ahead in agreeing to the arming of teachers. Quite a few of the State's counties had already addressed the issue, including our own red county, declaring that regardless of state legislation they would not be permitting armed teachers in the classroom.
