is it me or is export packing a rort !
 

i am sitting here surrounded by cartons and packing materials half way through boxing our contents up for the move home next week.

it amazes me given we are very tight on a container load that seemingly small items suddenly take on mammoth proportions when the packers have finished. A baseball bat and 2 sets of funyak oars have been wrapped together and have trippled in size !

the packers are all starting to sound like an advert for their groupage service and with some skillful work they can force our load size over the edge and cost me a bomb. we were still working yesterday so could'nt keep watch them as closely as we would have liked so guess I am going to spend this weekend repacking everything and filling all the gaps they may have left.

just wondered if anybody else had experienced this ?

LOL..had the same problem..so I did it myself..and instead of
68 boxes I got it down to 43 saved a bundle by doing it myself.
Boxes were picked up today and should be home in about
6 weeks.Were off back to Blighty in 2 weeks.. Yipeeee!

What shipping company did you use to go back to the UK? I am living in Chicago, and am thinking about what I can take back with me.

Hi We used Euro-transport International out of Montreal..
but the truck came from Chicago stopped here in Windsor
Ontario...Picked up the boxes and carried on to Montreal.

When we move back I think we will pack most things ourselves but have the movers pack the fragile items otherwise I think they won't insure them against breakage.

We have tons of boxes and most of them had hardly anything in them on the way over as the packers had packed them.

over packing of boxes is the surest way of damaging the contents,remember when loading a shipping container the tea chest size [dish pac] cartons are designed to fit tight 5across the container,this prevents the sides from bagging when the rest of the furniture is loaded on top,there is nothing worse than going out to pick up an owner packed job ,and find 20 different sized cartons,...................:D :beer: MM

We have all our standard size boxes from when the packers moved us over here, so still no need for to waste money paying the professionals what we can probably fo just as well.

just remember dm that PBO boxes will not be covered by your insurance , and some of the standards of loading i have seen coming out of the states and canada ,i would be very wary.........:D :beer: MM

Thats why we are definitely going to have to pay the movers to pack all of our fragile items, they will then be covered by insurance won't they?

But as for books and clothes and stuff, it seems pointless paying someone to do them.

Hi Daisymoll I would make 2 inventory lists...
1 with company packed items for extra insurance..
1 with self packed items.... But make sure you have enough
insurance to cover a total loss (ship goes down LOL)
I finished with 44 boxes... (no furniture)
It cost me (Can) $200 coverage for $20,000 Value.

with your photo albums ,valuable books ,etc place them in plastic zip lock bags ,then tape seal them, this will keep any moisture out, stack books on there edges they travel better this way.........MM
