Great to read all the comments on homes and furniture we have all loved and lost ...

Did the house choose us you asked Kate17 - yes I think it did because when we found it things just fell in to place like selling our other little house and both of us getting pay rises to afford the mortgage. Definately a bit of fate and luck there. We even used to pour a glass of wine and walk around the house and garden pinching ourselves to make it real that we actually lived there, sigh ...

I totally understand your comments on doing up a cottage over years and growing with it - Im not very DIY orientated but that must make one even more attached to a place.

Wonder where next in life ;)

Thanks for the stories about houses and furniture. Houses definitely choose people rather than the other way round. I have had some strange synchronicites with our last two houses.

The house we bought before the one I am in now, the vendors name was the same christian name as my husband and my maiden name. When my husband was little he used to call himself by my maiden name rather than is own, so it was the exact name of the vendor. We loved that house, but it was too big, but we put off selling it for a long time because I could tell the house did not want to let us go. Finally, when some perfect people came to buy it, it gave us up. When those people put in an offer, even though it was a bit lower than we wanted we didn't fight it, because we knew they were right for the house. The man of this couple had lived in the same county as me as a child.

The house we are in now we had seen for sale a year before. We came to see it on an open house and right from walking in the door I had a strong feeling that we would live in it...but it needed so much work and was expensive so we forgot about it and looked at other houses, two, that we put in offers for that subsequently fell through.

So we came back to this one, that was still for sale...We put in a silly offer and were accepted. The vendors name was the same as our last name, they were British too. The house has needed renovating top to to bottom. In 3 years we have never stopped working. Everytime, we complete a project we can sense the house giving it's approval. Now we are very close to finishing and it's going straight on the market where I hope we will get a lot. You would think the house would want to keep us, but it doesn't. It's glad to let us go. I like to think it's saying that it wants us to be happy where our hearts are, because the house does love us and true love is letting go.

Is it something in the fabric of bricks and mortar or is it a destiny that we are following and that's why we feel the approval, disapproval. Only time will tell.

What a good thread, we are living and loving Australia but I do so miss our UK home a 100 year old converted barn with massive rooms and sprawling rural gardens, we still have the acreage here but the house is modern :( can't have everything but loved my house
