Sorry, I'm thoroughly Americanized...not a ploughboy anymore. Problem is when I write favour or flavour or colour, or some such, I keep getting twigged by the spell checker. Rather then keep teaching it correct spelling, I've given in. Just as I pronounce Z as Zee, no longer as Zed.

So...

Cold starts (20degs or less)... Thoughts on why my Mini decides to not do those?

Is it a safety feature? "Cold out.. better stay home" Mode?

Did 3 of the cylinders go for a quick warm up and a cup of tea in the shed, like Leyland workers of old?

It's booked into the dealership anyway (warranty), but out of interest as the verdict is not yet in...

Twin Turbo in-line 4. Direct injection.

Starts perfectly if air temp is about 28-30degs or so, fails miserably below 25ish.

Once you DO get it running, runs rough (very) for up to 20 seconds or so, then smooth's out and feels normal.

Feels fine driving, no missing / stalling or anything out of the ordinary.

Crappy iPhone Vid goes here...

and here...

Figuring it has to be injectors or coil pack, but why only in the cold?

So it turns over but doesn't fire?

Spins fine, nice and fast. Fires (and runs) on a couple of cylinders, with the rest joining in once they get back from having a crafty fag.

Found this...

Possible cause?

"Secondary Air Injectors
Only turns on at cold start up for 20 seconds or so, dumps more air in so the ECU runs the car richer, which heats up your catalytic converters faster"

Cat converters sounds bunk, those things don't do anything till it's heated up a bundle of hundred degrees and 20 seconds of extra air won't be enough to heat them up to functioning....which is why they're environmentally unsound things to have on a commuter car that does less than 10 miles before stopping.

Anyway, as an aside, with the exhaust muffler that lot to the ground, might want to get some heat paint and paint it over, at least around the joints where the end pipe goes. Seems to extend the life of them by quite a way in snowy/slushy areas...

I don't think the problem is downstream of the engine. My guesses are either a tiny intake leak that allows just enough air in to weaken the mixture, fuel or ignition issues. I'd also check the compression just in case...

20 seconds after starting it up, everything seems to be normal again.
