Re: Let's talk about cars
For the petrol heads...we went to visit the Saratoga Auto Museum on our way home from our road trip.
Some lovely cars...though I'm not sure about that Andy Warhol paint job on the M1 BMW...

Re: Let's talk about cars
Talking of dream cars..mine arrives next week. I still question my sanity sometimes but this vehicle purchase will be a one off. I'll never be able to afford something like this ever again so what the hell? A genuine sports sedan that has the space of an SUV, 0-60 in 5.4 seconds, 240 mile range, free supercharger network coming enabling a full charge in 45 mins. Bye bye gas stations, hello electric socket...

Re: Let's talk about cars
I went to the local Honda dealer collect our Accord after it's 250,000 mile service, and there is a used car dealer on the adjacent lot, which is a late model specialist, a Carmax wanna be you might say. Anyhow I noticed that alongside the various Fords, Chevys, Dodges, Nissans, Hondas, Toyotas, etc. there was a fairly new looking Jaguar, at least that's what I thought, until I looked more closely when I realized it was a Maserati! I see them on the interstate occasionally, there are certainly a few around but I hadn't expected to see one for sale in a small town.

Re: Let's talk about cars
About two years after I moved into my condo, the 8 parking spaces next to my spaces were filled with cars. One was a Bentley, a Lamborghini, a Porsche, a Mercedes SL, and another 4 expensive cars that I don't remember.
Over the next few weeks as I walked into the garage, some of the cars were changed to other expensive cars but the Bentley and Lamborghini was there every day. I assumed that they must belong to a car dealer and he was just driving them.
Finally one day I was in the garage and I saw a guy in his early 30s getting into one of the cars and asked him if he was a "car dealer" and he said no, he owns a nightclub about 3 blocks away.
I talked to others in the complex and found out that he owned a nightclub that packs about 1,000 people per night on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and that he also owned a home in the hills with a 8-10 car garage. On the weekends, his nightclub was so packed and the lines to get in were so long that he had 35 bouncers working each night.
Apparently he rented one of the penthouse units since it was close to his nightclub but the homeowners were getting very upset with him since he was parking his cars in everybody else's spaces. Sometimes he also parked his Bentley in the handicap space for businesses instead of going into the resident parking area and park it there. After 6 months, the HOA forced the owner to evict him.
I will say one thing about him. He had one gorgeous girlfriend (maybe more) and she generally drove the Lamborghini.

Electric motors provide full torque at zero rpm.

Re: Let's talk about cars
Similar to owning a Prius, but more so. The owners think they are doing something to solve global warming, so it eases their conscience. In the case of the Tesla, it also has "prestige value" - tells the world they can afford to blow $80k on a partially functional car. The Tesla is only good for somewhere between 260 and 300 miles on a full charge, so you can drive it round town, and out to the golf club, or even to the lake, but it is no use for a road trip, nor for a day driving in the mountains, nor a long drive to the beach. The promised charging stations may solve some of these issues, at least if you're willing to be tied to charging at the locations where the charging stations are built. Honestly, I see them as an expensive novelty, a toy, and not part of the long term future of the automobile.
