Hmm, maybe I've misunderstood how the system operates, or maybe Florida has a different set up to other States?
When I started work I was given the opportunity to decide how much of my earnings were withheld for tax purposes, I know that my wife also keeps her withholding on the low side and assume that my stepdaughter and her partner, who struggle financially all year, are on the high side as they are expecting about 5k back as a refund.
Is the setting the level of withholding not a national thing?
So no, I'm not advocating not paying taxes, just not giving the IRS way more than they are due.

Edit: Apparently the W4 is the key.

Not over-withholding, which is why ZzrMark said, above.

We tweak our withholding a little each year, and have got it fine-tuned such that we usually get a few hundred dollars back from the state, and usually owe about $500-$700 to the federal government. I suspect that this year we might get a bit more more back from the federal government, somewhere around $1,000, after some additional deductible expenses during the year.

Anything that comes back by way of tax refunds was an interest free loan to the government, in other words, it's only your money that you're getting back!

BTW if you owe the federal government more than $1,000 you will start to attract penalties for not paying enough tax during the year.

Yeah, all taxpayers have to do it, and most Americans seem to favour over-withholding.

Isn't that the human desire to avoid a "loss" showing itself?

I certainly intend in future to fine-tune my withholding so that it balances out or at best gives me a few hundred back each year, but being new to the system with so many changes happening (for us) it's hard to establish a baseline. My 2016 Tax return I didn't work, my 2017 I was told to set my W4 exemptions to 1 (I'm married). This Yr I've set it to 2, but we are expecting our first child in June so come return time next year it'll be different again. Oh I'm also buying a house this yr. So my 2019 W4 and my 2020 tax return (for 2019) will be the first consistent year

We're getting a pretty good tax refund due to my wife being in school full-time and working part-time so I think we're going to go for a long weekend away somewhere, and anything left I'll put towards a Leer topper as I've had a quote back for one too!

Yeah it's fine, blame me for mentioning it very briefly in a post

Changing the subject, teaser for the Grand Tour episode looks great. Appears that they're in Canada messing around with trucks and other stuff.

The last three episodes have been awesome! Pretty much episodes of Top Gear in all but name. Conversation Street has been getting better, though there's still room for improvement, and I am afraid that the Face-Off segment will always be weak compared to the Stig-coached lap around Dunsfold, but at last Clarkson, Hammond, and May seem to have hit their stride.

Yeah you've hit the nail on the head there. The only thing I really don't like is the Celebrity (?) Face-Off. It's the only bit I fast-forward.

Absolutely loved the piece on Lancia vs Audi and we still have a cheap car challenge to come (two-parts I believe!).

Judging by Clarkson's social media posts it looks like they've been in Columbia filming for Season 3 already.

Yeah, that was a great segment, and had the look and feel of something snipped directly out of Top Gear.

Yep... I'm enjoying it a lot (hated season 1). So much closer to what it should be. Still don't like the guest track though. I get no sense of speed from it whatever.
