Hang on.. What Skoda?

We had a Cortina, I'll have you know. And it was an XL, none of your basic, non-vinyl covered roofs for us! No sir.

My dream came true when my dad bought a Mk2 Golf GTI in 1985. I'm really surprised he let me drive it by myself. Oh if he only knew what speeds I got out of it.

Biggest piece of junk I ever owned here was a Ford Escort. They were fairly popular in Britain...God knows why.

US build quality, and even vehicle specs, are often quite different for the US compared to overseas markets. For example the US Ford Contour was, by all accounts, a piece of junk, whereas the identical model in the UK, the Mondeo, was a market leader, and the name is still used on the replacement vehicle in the UK whereas Ford, quite sensibly canned the name Contour, replacing it with the Fusion, first on a reworked Mazda, then on the Mondeo, which thankfully seems to be built to UK/Europe standards.

Honda apparently sells an Acura badged as an Accord in the UK, so there is no compable model to the US Accura. The VW Passat is also a totally different car from the one sold in Europe (the US model is also sold in China). VW also sells Mexican-built Golfs/Rabbits in the US, and they don't compare well to those built in Europe. And then FCD for mysterious reasons (actually it was made wider to accommodate Americans fat är§es ) decided to take an Alfa and completely rework it to make the utterly hideous Dodge Dart, which was poorly designed and poorly built, and which I hear has been discontinued.

This might be why......

US Escort

UK Escort

The yanks often get the bad deal when it comes to cars. Look at the Saturn Astra! The H model Astra was a fantastic car, it looked awesome in sporthatch form (I know, I had one). GM for some totally unknown reason decided the Astra here would be offered with 1 engine choice. The 1.8 which was utter garbage. It was gutless and underpowered even for the U.K. market, so there is no way the tanks were gonna buy it in droves!

There was a Pontiac Astra in the 1970s which was the twin of the Chevy Vega. Awful cars both of them. The Vega I bought was the first one I owned in the US. It had an aluminum block engine and was also a gutless wonder. I always remember the air filter cover which would work loose from it's mounting bolts every so often and rattle like hell when driving. That car met a timely and well deserved end after the engine overheated while I was climbing the long steep grade over the Grapevine.

Other horrors I have owned besides the Escort before I finally saw the light and switched to Hondas, the Ford Granada which had a new kind of carburetor which leaked gasoline and it could not be repaired or rebuilt. You had to buy a completely new one and they weren't cheap, the Ford Tempo which probably had the roughest auto transmission ever manufactured and all three had the problem of sudden engine die out.

It wasn't all bad news back in those days though. I had a Rambler Rebel with a 350 V-8 and it looked very much like the classic Dodge Charger of "Bullitt" fame. That car could move too, no smog device junk on it.

I also owned a 1965 Ford Galaxie while living in Canada, cherry apple red convertible. I still have dreams about that car

Ford Capri just got sold this week
1987 Ford Capri 280 'Brooklands' with 936 miles on the clock sells for £54,000 | Daily Mail Online

I think I was able to wheel spin mine for about 1/4 mile. Worst car for handling corners
