I could never afford cars, so I've never sold any, I just part-exchanged one and I don't regret that at all. Which kind of makes me a bit of a pikey, so that's way too close to Hammond. Also, I'm kind of short, too.

My first car was totaled 48 days after I bought it. That in itself was Top Gearesque, given that it was a Morris Ital. Remarkably a piano didn't fall on it.

My second car I ran into the ground, a 1.6 Sierra with 101,000 on the clock that I gave up on when I was told it needed a new radiator, suspension, steering mechanism, and at least a couple of other major things. I swapped it, with £2,600, for my third car, an Alfa 164, the only car I sold as a vehicle that had a prospect of long future use. I regretted selling it at the time, and have done ever since. I learned a couple of years ago that it was scrapped a year after I sold it.

Wonderful! That article says everything that needs to be said.

I introduced one of my managers to it after be told me he and his son were watching Top Gear, "a funny car show with three guys on it". After a few minutes talking I realised he was watching it on the History Channel. I redirected him to BBC America and learned a few weeks later that he and his son found the "original" to be much funnier were binge-watching Top Gear on Netflix.

Top Gear: Who will replace Jeremy Clarkson? - BBC News

If it's Ant and Dec, I will probably write a very strongly worded letter to The Times!

At this point, they should probably just let it go. What made Top Gear what it was, was the chemistry between the three presenters. Take one out of the equation, for whatever reason, and it won't be the same and it certainly isn't likely to draw the huge audience of the latest run.
