Re: Let's talk about cars
I remember the old Crossleys and Daimlers chugging up Chapeltown hill to pick us up from school, clouds of diesel smoke everywhere. On Mondays you could still smell the booze fumes from the Saturday night users.

Sorry, but you can't use "car" and "Citroen Picasso" in the same sentence...
Which model of Morgan do you have? I nearly bought a Plus 4 a couple of years back but OH vetoed it. My garage here specialises in 'Brit' cars + Volvo, so we have Morgan, Jaguar, Land Rover, and McClaren...
Not in the same league I know, but in the UK I used to have an MGB which developed a similar lumpy idling problem when in traffic, so I had to learn a bit of the left foot shuffle thing. Was not happy doing that, so I ended up borrowing someone else's car for town stuff.

I have a 4/4 four-seater, that my dad bought new in 1985 (having "put his name down" in about 1978!) and that he passed on to me in 2008 when he was declared medically unfit to drive it. It has the carburetted version of the Ford CVH 1.6 (as used in Fiesta XR2 and early Escort XR3 versions, before they went to fuel injection) so not exactly the world's most racy vehicle, but then it is running a front suspension geometry unchanged since about 1923!
There are a few Morgan owners up in this part of Ontario - mine is amongst the more recent models as Canada made it very difficult to import new ones in the '90s. And most of what made its way to the North American market was the more sporty versions, +4s and +8s, rather than the sit-up-and-beg 4/4 model. There are one or two other four-seaters around, but it definitely gets its fair share of odd looks, especially when actually travelling 4-up with a wicker picnic hamper on the luggage rack!

Citroën Aberration. Such a good name for a future model!
Early '80s a drinking mate used to bring his dad to the pub every fortnight or so to get him out of the house for a bit.
Dad was in his late seventies, and had worked as an upholsterer with Rolls Royce for many years. One evening I mentioned that I was in the market for a new car, and was seriously looking at an Audi. Dad pipes up with "Audi? German. Bit pricey, but good quality build. Reliable."
As they were leaving, dad bends down to me and mutters "Never buy a French car. They rattle."

My 2l Turbo A6 dropped a valve and dumped me on a busy roundabout (Cheers Audi ).
Two basic Citroen ZX estates, both with the Peugeot 1.8 TD engine, went on and on, both cost me 500 quid each. The first I sold for 100 quid still running fine with over 260K on the clock, the other had over 180K on the clock when I pranged it. Basic but reliable, that said I wouldn't touch a C3 with a bargepole...

Re: Let's talk about cars
I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos on London's black cabs, and just now a documentary that interviewed protesting black cabbies, an Uber driver and a mini-cab business. Lots of people say black cabbies don't pay their fair share of tax.
How much does the the average black cab driver take home per day, after fuel, and insurance expenses are deducted?

Re: Let's talk about cars
When I returned from my 'Jeep wilderness' - in 2006 - I looked once again at Audi, and thought 'bu**er me, that's a bit steep price-wise', so started to cast around. I don't like BM's or Mercs, I looked at a couple of Japanese offerings, but eventually settled on Jaguar, which for an equivalent spec - actually arguably a higher spec - to the Audi I was looking at, came out at about CHF 15,000 less, so no brainer.
I've had no problems at all with the Jaguar in almost 12 years apart from someone in a Smart ramming me and trying to claim it was my fault - the police took one look and disagreed - and a few months ago some git stole my roof antenna...
I'd love to keep my Jaguar and go through the clunky import process, but (a) it's now 12 years old, still only with 80,000 km on the clock, and (b) OH simply doesn't like driving it.
As a passenger, she loves it...

Re: Let's talk about cars
In the end I ordered a camper shell/cap/topper thing - $2200 with tax which I felt was a little steep but Leer appear to be one of the top two brands so thought I may as well pay a little more and get the extra features such as a brake light on the back of it and some better windows.
Apparently the company have received the shell and should be painting it this weekend so I'm pretty excited to get out with it after seeing my new neighbor who has a Tacoma with a topper (and is a delightful scotsman) with his camper setup!
