I've heard that even though the turbos only put out 35 more hp and 40 ft/lbs more torque or so they make a HUGE difference in driving! If it would've been a turbo model I wouldn't have rec'd it to my sister. He's been driving a bit now though.

When the engine blew he immediately started scheming a 1JZ-MTE later model engine swap, but even the regular same year turbo swap would've been a LOT more work and effort and he needed the car running. A shame really, that cash would've gone a long way engine wise.

How does selling a car work here (AZ in particular)? Do I get dinged for taxes? Does CarMax give good offer or am I better off trying Craiglist?

In other news, anyone after a 99 Lincoln Towncar or know someone in the car service biz that might want to pay handsomely for one. Relatively low mileage (93k), which is barely broken in for a Towncar.

Selling a personal possession for less than you paid for it does not incur a tax liability.

Personally, I would try an autotrader.com ad first, though as Craig's list is free there's no harm in trying that too.

I don't know about there, but here the buyer pays tax on the purchase price of the car when they get the title. I've never claimed income from a car sale on my taxes. Which probably makes me a felon

CarMax tends to give you fairly low offers anyway and they won't be interested in a Towncar that old.

CL or ebay is probably your best bet, maybe Autotrader but there aren't that many people looking for cheaper cars on Autotrader.

Try ebay you never know who may want one. You have a base price of what you would get over the scales.
I have sold items on ebay for a lot more than I would have asked on Craigslist.

Well, it is 15 years old, expensive as shit to fix (by comparison) if anything goes wrong, and a gas hog. So you need a buyer willing to overlook all of that. There are those people who think driving a 15 old Lincoln carries some status. Most of them live in trailer parks, I'm guessing. Or pimps. Yes, pimps like those. But, seriously, you may well find someone who truly wants it if it is super clean and no mechanical defects. Does your state have a mechanical fitness requirement? If so, a purchaser might want to have it inspected before buying. If not, then not too important unless there are obvious issues like brake chatter, noisy exhaust or loose steering.

OK. I looked on Craiglist for Arizona. There are some 97 and 98's for sale. It depends on what series. Town Car Signatures, 1998 seem to be about $1950. There is a Cartier, 97, for $3900. So there are some crazy people there. Not sure if the link will take you direct, but it should.

Heck what goes wrong on these, heater cores? Intake manifolds? Timing chain tensioners? Figure out what you're willing to sell it for and stick it on craigslist, see what happens. You could also try posting at places like Lincolnsonline.com under 'for sale', they don't mind and you might find a ready buyer.

For the record, both my old 97 and current 03 fullsize 4.6l average/d between 18 and 20 mpg, heavily tilted towards city driving. The TC is a little heavier.
