The Leaving 'Do'
 

Our moving date is fast approaching and we have now booked our leaving party.
Thing is, I'm dreading it, as I think I'm going to be a blubbering mess with all the goodbyes. We have about 150 people coming so that a lot of goodbyes to take.....was wondering how others did theirs and how they coped?

We didn't have a party, then a couple small dinners out with friends and family. Other than that we didn't really do much.

As for coping, it was a little sad but with Skype and Facebook its not too bad

Yeah, I know. ..... But I've never heard of anyone having one, and much less did I ever think of having one myself. What's everyone supposed to do, "oooh" and "aaaaah", and congratulate you on your good fortune in moving to the US? :rolleyes:

I didn't think it was a "thing" either, but any excuse for a party, right!

In my case 10 years ago, there wasn't time or desire for such a big do.

As a K1 immigrant there was about a 6 month period between deciding to apply, and leaving, but only about 3 weeks from receiving the visa, and leaving. In the interim, my Fiancee came to visit and we managed to visit the friends and family that matter.

Once the visa came,it was a huge rush to quit work & flat, book flight and get out of Dodge ASAP.

There was a traditional booze up with workmates on my last day there, but that was a frequent event anyway.

Even without a "do", that was one of the most stressful periods of my life!

We had a little family get together at my sister's house about a week before leaving. M had a drunken lunch session with the guys he worked with on his last Friday working, other than that we just left;)

The weather was beautiful and we realized we had loads of friends.

Should have cancelled the whole idea at that point.

:D When I was a kid I didn't understand it, my mum and dad were always going to 'do's'.

I had a "do" at a restaurant with the people from work, with lots of drinking. That was it.

This, with colleagues and ex-colleagues.

Plus dinner with my parents, but that was a frequent event too.

Ours is more family and friends based. I was never one for socialising with work colleagues too much.
