Granted, there are "2x" timber joists that are used in construction that are not pressure treated (and are therefore not suitable for use outdoors), but the "5/4 deck boards" I specified above do not have a non-pressure treated equivalent.

I saw a company recently that did custom decks to mothball pools. They set it up with a sump pump and hatch so you can use it as storage. I think they were called "deckover ".

I have seen many a deck made out of non treated lumber just to save costs I would assume. It may just be a West coast thing. Any reputable company will use "deck" timbers or cedar.

True, you could make a deck out of red cedar which wouldn't need to be treated, but it would cost you a pretty penny.

I had never seen anyone build a deck from untreated lumber until a neighbour at the end of our road built one from untreated pine last summer. It is visible from the road and I pointed it out to Mrs P right after it was first built.

Actually when we bought the house the bank had had a huge wooden and plastic 'grid' put over the pool. It had obviously been built in situ and had to be sawn off. It wasn't a deck though

I was envisaging making something attractive and useful, not just "safe".
