Might not be the 'right' way to do it (but WGAF), though it didn't taste like shit so it worked for me.

As I said in the post you quoted from, ten or more years ago. My wife and I are skinflints from way back. This is why we've lived without debt, and our income has always exceeded our expenditure.
I'm in England just now. Kettles run from £8 (basic supermarket model) to £99 (fancy retro model, SMEG or similar, from the local electrical shop or John Lewis.) We paid £24.99 for a very nice Morphy Richards one that came in a range of colours.

I've done similar when faced with necessity, usually at work when I wasn't about to buy an electric kettle. Just microwaved my mug with water in it, about two minutes usually did the trick, plopped in the teabag and off I went.

You'll likely never see it, but: Risk of Burns from Eruptions of Hot Water Overheated in Microwave Ovens

Weird, ours is a little over 13 years old and still going strong. 3 or 4 years ago I thought it was broken because it wouldn't turn on, but I left it for a day and it started working again. Don't they make the same kind any more but it's a Braun WK200, cost about $35. Made in Germany, maybe that's why it's lasted.

I'm a fan of cheapest at Walmart RIVAL brand for stuff. Most everything breaks or it's impossible to clean so just go for the off least expensive.
I have one of these in my bedroom. Rival Plastic Kettle, 1.7L - Walmart.com In the kitchen I have an Aldi Kitchen Living one but I usually use the stove top.

Been here 30+ years, gave up this battle, I buy OVENTE for under $20 on Ebay, who cares if they don't last more that 2 years!

Re: Kettles never last
I am getting tired of replacing electric kettles. Does anyone else have this issue. Hardly get a year out of them, the present one is much shorter than a year and it has just gone.
I am wondering if it is shoddy workmanship or an electrical problem at my end. Though everything else works fine, toaster is the only other thing with a heating element on the same outlet, but no problems with it.
I am unsure whether to go with cheap as a replacement, viewing it as a short term deal. I'd spend a lot if I thought it was a solution, but dont want to spend big and have that one go to.

We have a commercial Keurig in our breakroom at work... if you lift the lid on the area that the pod goes in and drop it again without the pod you can get plain hot water... we do this quite often for other things.

The first few kettles that I bought in the U.S. were crap, but I have had this Russell Hobbs, model for about 8 years now and it is still going strong Ellora 1-2/3-Liter Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle| Russell Hobbs RH13552

Kettles have feelings too. They probably object to you using teabags. Do the righteous thing and start using leaf tea, as God intended.

I now try to buy electrical items from costco, their returns policy is fab. Anything breaks within a year? Full refund no problem.
