USGS website on this temblor.

This always brings back memories of 4:31 a.m January 17, 1994 to me.

I was up late here on the East Coast and watched these videos live. It was horrifying to watch, knowing there were people in those homes and cars being swept away.

I tried to tell you...

The wave did not amount to too much on the Oregon coast; my friend just described it as similar to a winter storm surge, but it could have been so much worse. The footage of the wave in Japan was just mesmerizing; we stayed up so late just agape at it.

I work for a Japanese company and e-mailed a few colleagues in Tokyo to see if they're alright. It happened while they were at work and they now have no means to get home since all the trains and most roads are closed.

So far from not hearing from them, they're camping out at the office overnight and e-mailing us!

Amazing. Did they say if they had any advance warning? Or were they totally caught by surprise?

Fingers and toes crossed for the whole west coast.

Is anybody watching the news? How'd Hawaii do?

A friend whose mother is from Valpariso noted that FaceBook was good. The Chilean relatives were able to post sporadically via their I-Phones and thereby leave messages they were OK.

BTW, from experience, news photos tend not get the picture of the overall area and focus only on the damage.
