Iphone 5 or 5c or Samsung galaxy S5

Groupon have a couple of deals going and I need a new phone.

for about the same price:
Iphone 5c
Iphone 5

or Samsung Galaxy S5

I've never had an iphone but all my music is on itunes because I had my ipod. I know I can change the music files for the samsung but, well I haven't managed to get it onto the Nokia and I'm very reluctant to ask the kiddoes again for help - they just laugh at me!

I mostly use my phone for music, running a few apps like endomondo, photos and mostly talking not texting.

I went from iPhone 5 to a Samsung Galaxy 5 and I hate it. If I can flog it on Gumtree I'll buy myself an iPhone 6.

Go with what you're used to. If you're accustomed to using Apple products and services then go with that. I'd been on Android for years and then decided to give an iphone a go. Needless to say I preferred my Android and dislike the iphone. I'd say that if you're more technically inclined and like personlizing your phone to your needs, go with Android, if you prefer a phone out of the box, ready to go, with a simple UI and minimal tech know-how, go with Apple.

Just for contrast, I had Android literally on the day the first Droid was released. I had that, then a Samsung Fascinate and a Galaxy Nexus. I fiddled with it so much that the battery would be dead by 2pm, so when I was due a replacement, I got an iPhone 5s, which gives me a MUCH better battery life. I now carry the 5s and a 6 (home & work) and have a Galaxy S5 on my desk (and several older iPhones IN my desk), and I much prefer the simplicity of the iPhone.

Sometimes too much control can be dangerous.

I use a 5c, does everything I want it to do and more. I can dictate reports, surf the interweb, write this post, track my steps, check weather and lake temps, what ever I look at on a PC I can see from my cell.

I started on a Droid. Avoided IPhone mainly due to the extra exspence but now I am hooked, iPhone all the way pal

The offer on groupon has only 16gb memory - what have you got? Do you think 16gb will be enough?

Had an iphone for about 5 yrs (first the 3 then 4g) then switched to Galaxy5 and never looked back. LOVE my galaxy. Maybe cuz it's named after my favourite chocolate but also - for me- much user friendly.

I have a Samsung S5. Upgraded the memory card to 32GB for $20 so I could stuff half of my music on there (I have a lot of music), wireless charging added. It's waterproof, so no fear of killing it if I fall into the pool or sea. Excellent camera. Nice big screen, don't know why Apple took so long to make a phone with a decent size screen. Maybe they'll add more useful things like widgets eventually too. If you are going to get an iPhone get the bigger S6 model and a case.

16gb isn't enough memory for a modern smart phone unless you use your phone for nothing but calls and texts and maybe the odd app.

That's why they have iCloud I guess. My phone has 4 pages of stuff on it and I have just over 5GB spare. Although I don't have much music or any games.

That's fine, but iCloud only gives you 5gb of free storage. Once you start storing your backups on there that soon starts to get eaten away. Also you are limited in what you can store on iCloud. The reason I say 16gb isn't enough is apps are becoming more complex meaning they are larger. Plus each software update is generally bigger than the last. What a lot of people don't realize, a dis a bit of a con, is the 16gb is when the phone has nothing on it. Once you load the operating system on to it, that uses part of the memory. They are typically 3-4gb.

If you are concerned with privacy then get an iPhone, if not then an Android is fine.
Google make their money from the information they mine from you. Apple makes their money on the hardware and services they sell you.

You mean the OS takes around 3-4Gb right, leaving you 12Gb to 13Gb.

My current phone has 64Gb, my wife just 16Gb. She doesn't take a lot of pictures, hardly any video, and consumes media from streaming services. She has a ton of programs and games on it. 16Gb is more than enough for her needs.
I currently have 16Gb of photos on my phone, and 2.2Gb of messages.
If you take a lot of pictures/videos, then 16Gb is probably not enough.

I've been doing weekly/monthly tech support for my parents for years.

Right before I left the UK I got them both set up on macs and iPhones.
Yes, it was expensive. No, I don't need to worry about their tech situation anymore.

My mum even signed up for the classes they do at the Apple store. She loves it.
Because there will be little user 'friction', and long term stability on the platform I consider the premium worth it.
