I think "should of" is a badly pronounced contraction, "should've".

You'd think so, but a lot of times people are quite clear in saying "should of" and meaning it.

Should of is a lack of education I think - some people say it here too. Really grates me.

The biggest US one for me is "I'll bring it with"... With what? And it isn't bring cos you're not there...

And the other thing I find tricky is greetings, which I know have also been touched upon. When my gf answers the phone she asks me "what's up" which has negative connotations to me, suggesting that she believes something is wrong. I automatically respond with "umm.. nothing... why?" which kills conversation before it starts! Similarly, when I say "Alright" which I do when I answer the phone, she used to say "yeah of course I am, why?" because that had similar negative connotations to her, suggesting I felt there was something the matter with her....

She has gotten () over it now, although I am still struggling!

I used to feel the same when I got here, when people asked "What's up?". They mean hello. I think they mean, what's the matter?

"What's up?"
"Nothing. Why?"

Confused the heck outta 'em.

My favourite was "Robustify" The act of making something robust.

I didnt! We were working on networking code that had proven unstable and the coder said he "wanted to spend some time robustifying it".

Well that's new to me then. I think that's his own personal word if you ask me. Personally I've never heard of the word 'robustify' in network parlance. Perhaps he meant to say 'harden'.

One phrase which I hear quite a lot when out and about shopping and it always makes me smile is: "Can I get a raincheck?" Took me a while to realise that it had nothing to do with the weather

It did originally. It was handed out when an event was postponed due to rain.

I am not sure if this non-word has been posted in this thread yet but when I hear someone say irregardless it drives me absolutely bonkers. It's regardless.

Now there's timing.

Does this thread include bad spelling?

I just saw the word "reposessed" on a TV ad for a debt consolidation company.

And mispronunciations?

Like "reefer-nanced". As in re-financed. Sometimes they even forget the second syllable completely... "reef-nanced".

And how about a "war; n' tee" instead of "warranty"?

Now I know they have their own pronunciation of words but I feel these are still poorly pronounced within their own "language".
