International Driving Permit

International Driving Permit
I just reserved a rental car in UK for a visit next week, and the confirmation said this: "You need to bring: Valid Driver's License and International Driving Permit."
I've never bothered with an International Driving Permit before and don't want to bother ... anyone know if this is really required?

Where was your licence issued? Which company are you renting from?

I've always known them to only be required if the licence isn't in English. Give em a call.

Agreed, Tom. It's a few years since I've rented in England, but I never produced anything more than my current Cayman Islands licence. (We're a UK colony; I don't know if that made a difference.)

Agree. I just used my US license by itself last time I rented in the UK.

Re: International Driving Permit
I have hired cars around the world and have never, ever been asked to produce my International Driving Permit, to the point that I stopped getting one several years ago.
The permit is just a translation of your licence - it is not a licence itself - and if your current licence is in English that will suffice.
