I can't say I'm a big fan of Houston. Been awhile since the last time I was there, maybe it's improved.

Actually it's god-awful in the winter!! Especially last winter - worst I have ever experienced in my life. Let's hope the coming one isn't too bad.

Its not the winter that makes it bad. It simply IS bad.

Weather complainers will complain about the weather regardless of where the bad weather takes place. Me, in NYC in a total blizzard at minus 10 o C I can be happily walking along to wherever it is I am going together with loads of other people. The restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs, theatres, concerts halls etc - none gets shut up becuase of the weather in in NYC. Just a few miles across the river in NJ, life stops in the same weather.

Now see on Hawaii I think I would suffer the same problem I had in Alaska. I felt trapped, like everywhere else was so far away. The limited road system doesn't help up there either, the best road is the road OUT

Hawaii's redeeming feature of course is the weather, year round warmth does sound rather nice.

If you live there year round, possible downsides of Hawaii are the winter rainy season (with monsoon-like downpours) and the frequent earthquakes. I experienced both years ago.

well ive lived in Eureka CA and loved the mellow way of life
I now life in the East Bay and love the busyness and the closeness to the city and interestingly after moaning for about 3 solid months I like the weather!!

BUT my dream would be to have a loft apartment in New York - it will remain a dream probably but oh it would be fun!

To much watching Sex and the City me thinks!!

After living on two acres for 10 years I wouldn't be able to stand hearing my neighbours through the walls, floor or ceiling. Or are building standards high enough that you don't hear them?

It depends on the building.

Pre-war buildings are better because they have thicker more solid brick walls. In my NYC pre-war apartment the only noise I can occasionally hear is if the upstairs neighbour has his son home and the son has friends, they stomp about, or play loud computer games or music. So it's person dependent. Some people walk without stomping other stomp when they walk. Person dependent meaning how your upstairs neighbour walks.

In my 2-prior NYC apartment which was post-war, I could hear my next door neighbour having sex.

I would love to occasionally spend time somehwere like yours though. Ironically I am extremely sound sensitive and am always asking for the sound to be turned down here and there (e.g. in school lecture, the level of the microphone of the lecturer or the distance of the microphone to his mouth (YES I did that) or the volume of the music in the gym, I could go on. And yes, I live in NYC, probably the noisiest place in the USA

I think there is, it's very expensive and it chucks down with rain. Plus you're looking at long plane flights to get anywhere. Not high on my list of places to live.

This is why I said St. Croix, bit easier to escape from. Lower taxes as well.

Monterey, CA. Or anywhere north of there just before hitting San Jose.

Reason? The whole area is completely beautiful. Very wealthy, with high levels of employment and great quality of life.

You really do have to explain why, because it would be way down my list.

There was some extended family pressure for us to do a vacation there, I successfully fought it off.

We went to Kauai this year, without the kids. My wife has always wanted to go to Hawaii, and I was happy to go along with it. We both agreed that it was beautiful, and we had a wonderful time, but we'd never live there. In addition, the other large islands are more heavily populated than Kauai, so I'm not sure I'd enjoy a vacation there.
