I can't read the labels at the supermarket anymore, I would need longer arms, glasses might be an easier option.

I realised around by 24th birthday I could no longer see clearly in the distance.

I have no sympathy. :sneaky:

Although welcome to the word of the visually impaired.

My ex has worn glasses his whole life, he looked quite smug when he saw me put some on for reading.

Or disposable Lenses.. I just take them out and chuck them. I've worn them since I was 19.. and my prescription has changed very little since then.

Stay well clear of Lense Crafters!

Try Sams Club, I was happy with the glasses/eye test I got with them.

Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to get laser surgery? :)

Yes and no. I value my eyesight to much to let people uck about with it.
Also, to the lasik crowd - what are you going to do when you get older?...

I had Lasik 9 yrs ago. Do your research thoroughly and don't take the cheapest route.

What do you mean?

Probably, but I think the risks outweigh the benefit in my case. My uncorrected vision isn't too bad; I can get by without glasses if I have to, but I can't read traffic signs until I'm very close, so I don't want to drive without them. My wife's uncorrected vision was so bad that she couldn't do anything if she lost or broke her glasses, so she opted for the surgery.

I tried contacts a couple of times, but I just couldn't get used to them.

With these comments at least, OF isn't taking the mick. When I first needed glasses (about 25 years ago) I started with cheapo frames and lenses. I'm now wearing specs that cost about $700 (titanium frame made in Japan, short-corridor progressive lenses with coatings).

You'll get what you pay for. In the US there are three levels of optical care. Top tier is the Ophthamologist - a medical doctor who specializes in the eyes. Next tier down is the Optometrist - not a medical doctor but a vision specialist who went to a specific optometry college. Lastly we have the Optician, the person who fits your glasses.

My wife's had the laser surgery, so she sees an Ophthamologist every year. I get a yearly checkup with an experienced Optometrist, and I get my glasses from an independent Optician who does a very good job. I'm not going back to the bottom feeders who compete on price.

To the original poster, I suggest you seek out a good Optometrist for a checkup. Many of them can also provide a decent selection of frames and lenses. Otherwise, find a good optician. Avoid Lenscrafters et al. if you can.

But, gosh darn it! Which one of those is an EYE DOCTOR?!?!?

With one possible exception - if, like me, your vision changes each year, laser surgery is only temporary - you'll still need glasses later. I'm waiting for my 'prescription' to stabilize - then I'll consider it.

My vanity is preventing me from doing this but there comes a time..

Wait long enough and you will develop cataracts and then when they are removed you will no longer require glasses. Going through that now.

Just go to any optical service company, i.e. Lenscrafters, Pearl Vision Center, Sears, JC Penney or look in your yellow pages.
