I am a dual US/UK citizen. My US Passport expired recently and I wonder how far I can get on my UK passport given Brexit. Can I go US to Netherlands un impeded for example? I have not travelled international for about 5 years.

You need to use your US passport to fly back to the USA so that is the bigger problem I believe

You can fly and stay in the Nederlands on your British Passport for up to 90 days, even post Brexit.

As a US citizen you must leave and re-enter the US on your US passport.

Once out of the country, you can go to any other country on your British passport, irrespective of Brexit.

The passport issue was resolved.
My new question is about ssa disability. I am applying with a lawyer, just wondering if anyone has experience worth sharing?

I only have indirect annecdotal experience regarding the situation of a married couple I knew, who I shall call Alice and Bob, and a lawyer I spoke to briefly to try to find out what Bob's prospects were for appealing a disability application rejection.

Alice had been on SSA disability for a number of years, she had limited mobility and at least some of her issues were a result of being HIV+. Bob worked as a manual laborer, and who during the time I knew them, had a stroke and was therefore manifestly unable to work. About 5 years from retirement, he applied for SSA disability, and was rejected.

What I learned from the lawyer I spoke to was that pretty much everyone was rejected based on their initial application, and the average/typical successful applicant succeeded on their fifth application!

In Bob's case, he had been rejected because, as far as I could tell, for much of his working life his employer had been pocketing his SS contributions, so he didn’t have enough credits to qualify for disability. Despite, IIRC, a prosecution of his employer for SS/payroll fraud, Bob was SOL. .... This is unlike the UK where the victims of NI fraud are deemed to have made contributions even though their employer pocketed the NI deductions.

The result of Bob's situation was that the SSA awarded him 50% of Alice's SSA, presumably based on her contributions. ... But then cut Alice's payments in half! :blink:

This whole sad and sorry tale is definitely a case to file under $4!t you couldn't make up. :(

So, to your case, you need to be aware that the SSA definitely play hardball with disability applications.

Agree with above having noticed how many adverts there are for lawyers advising people who have had their SSA disability application rejected.
It seems to be a huge business.....

Good to hear from you all.
I get that it's tricky. My lawyer will remain unnmaed for know, but my hope is they will circumvent excuses for refual, despite the current upheaval under the current admin. If it doesent work out i will likely head back to uk and rely on nhs. Not that i am that sick, just not physically able to work reliably.

I realize that what I might get will be a fraction of what I used to earn, which wasn't huge. But might as well try!
fwiw I would love to hear what Folinky has to say.off the record of course. I know this is not your specialty, but I have always respected your opinion. Sorry if it sounds like I am seeking a legal opinion. I am not:(
