Re: Hurricane Irma
I remember that one and also remember that when my stepson married in Halifax they had the wedding photos done in a lovely park in Halifax which was decimated by a hurricane only a few short weeks later. He married on August 11th and the hurricane was early September. 2003? or there abouts.

I hope for the best for those affected by this storm.

In other news, we may get some bad storms here in Charlotte, so I decided to do what anyone else would do... a large grocery trip.

You'll be surprised how many are staying. I'm probably leaving tomorrow evening.

Re: Hurricane Irma
Yes, but comparing hurricanes that hit Canada to the ones that hit the tropics are apples and oranges. Hurricanes need warm water to retain their strength. The strongest hurricane to EVER hit Canada was in 1927 - winds of 165 kph - which made it a mid-range Category 2. Our house went through numerous hurricanes of that strength without losing electricity or suffering any damage whatsoever. That is light years away from what a hurricane like Irma or Harvey can do.
This is also why I repeat my warning to evacuate - people go through Category 2s like that and think a bigger storm is only shades of strength bigger, when they actually expand in strength geometrically, as another poster mentioned. Do not think that because you made it through a Category 2 hurricane, you will make it through a Category 4 or 5 hurricane in roughly the same way.

Yes, see my quote above. The same thing happened in Hurricane Andrew. Oh, I've been through hurricanes before what's the big deal?
A hurricane this size hits once-in-a-generation, Andrew was 25 years ago so it's that time again.
I do hope it only grazes Miami, and people in a few days' time are complaining that everyone made a mountain out of a molehill.

Studying NOAA data, came across the satellite feeds. This is shaping up to be spectacular with 3 storms. Visible Sat
3 or 4 days yet, but it is currently looking better for me on the West coast than the East of Florida.

I'm annoyed because they've closed the schools but my office is still open tomorrow!
I'm still doing shutters this evening but in my whole neighborhood probably 1 in 10 houses have their shutters up.

I'm about 10 miles inland, we aren't under that mandatory evacuation here.

In 2004 I arrived in June and in August was honeymooning in Key West when Charley came. We left 2 days early back here, then 2 days later left our waterside apartment and went 20 miles to a hotel in Brandon. Even then we were more in the path than had been predicted. So it's a hard call.
