How much tax
 

It's been a while since I have ventured onto this site but as it looks like we are returning to the UK I think it's time I did some homework.

First question ( of many to come over the next few months)

I have a provisional job offer, in the UK, and the pay is 20k pa. I used to earn more b4 we came to Oz so I have no idea what sort of tax I will have to pay on that wage.
Divide 20,000 by 52 and you get 385 quid a week but what I need to know from you clever chaps is what will be my take home pay ?
I don't know if there are still different tax brackets but I will be in the one that includes married man with 2 kids under 10.

how long do you have to be back to qualify for any state benefits, dole money etc. I know that as I havn't paid my NI I am not eligable straight away for benefits ( maybe the UK could adopt the centrelink method or I could become an east european immigrant and claim shed loads of money as soon as we landed) hmmmm. :frown:

First time you hit Go, it may take you to a different page - hit the back button and try again and it should work.

Looks like 20k will net 1,276 a month, 295 a week on a single person's allowance.

As much as benefits offer the support many families need it also fails us. You slander "Eastern Europeans" for using the benefit system yet you wish to do the same.

I think that if the benefits are available then it is little wonder people simply use them. It is unfair to attack people from certain parts of the world for wanting State benefits if the State is willing to provide them.

Good luck with your move and lets hope your new boss isn't Romanian ;)

Here is another calculator, as long as you have an idea as to what your tax code will be it works it straight out for you.

In the case of a tax code of 522L the first £5220 you earn is not taxable, then £10% on the first £2230 above this, then 22% on the next £32370 above that, anything over £39825 you pay 40%tax.

That is not a particularly good salary compared to cost of living in most parts of the U.K. - especially for someone with a family. (it's ok for a new graduate or equivalent).

It's not a good salary at all, considering that the national average is now around £25,000.

How on earth can a family survive on that?? :confused:
