ouch....but rats, they are considered exotic pets so cost a fortune in treatment...you might be able to find a vet who hasn't worked on a rat that's willing for a huge discount...a friend of mine at work does that, about half the cost.
I did the same with a previous rat, the place hadn't done rats but the vet had previously so wanted extra practice, the snip was around $150, half price...ouch.

One of my cats was once diagnosed with HBC. Her left front leg was dislocated and had multiple fractures. The vet (we live in a rural area, and he mostly deals with large animals) gave us two options .. one was $40, and the other was $5,000+. The high option involved orthopaedic surgery, steel pins, etc, and the $40 was put it in a plaster cast for a couple of weeks. We chose the $40 deal, and she lived for several more years (with a bit of a limp.) I think a fox got her eventually. Or a coyote, a fisher, or maybe a great horned owl...
