How hard is this going to be??

Hi everyone,

I have had a passion for the States for most of my life and now i am almost close to finishing my 22 year military career i am thinking more about making an application of some sort to make the move over there.

My background: i have no family over there, as far as my job/trade goes, i specialised in fleet management within the military which is not a skilled trade although when we are with 6 months left in the army we have a resettlement program to train us in which ever field we want, but i may also struggle on a visa with this.

I fear my bubble may burst with trying to make a move to the States, my wife has recently become keen in moving, but how can i make this a reality and not a dream?

This will get more responses on the Immigration/Visa forum in the US section of this site. People in MBTTUK are moving to, not from, the UK.

In the meantime, I can advise you to check Pulaski's Ways (in the Wiki: http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Pulask...ork_in_the_USA).

Your best bet might be to use your retraining allowance to study for a degree in the States on an F-1 visa. If you choose the right degree (and university), and do well in your OPT (optional practical training), you might get offered a job - by then, hopefully the economy and job market will have improved.

Isn't there also the possibility of joining the US army and getting a Green Card by getting shot at (again)?

You dont have to be a US citizen to join the US army, I have heard of lots of brits who enlisted and became residents. The head of security in the twin towers was a brit who joined the US marines then retired to take a security job. Sad new is ..... he died in the attack.

With the Stop-Loss Policy, from what I understand, you can never really quit the army/marine nowadays...if you're fine with that, than I guess it's ok.

I have a friend in the service who applied into the US Army, but it was a no go, its not even that easy to get into their service.

As far as Afghanistan goes, i came back last year with one of my young soldiers KIA but it happens, 22 years doing this job is also very rewarding, although death is not.

i will keep researching into the process

Good luck with your dream, I hope you can find a way over, have you looked at Canada, I think it's a little easier to get in there and you could maybe move here at a later time?

The only Brit guy we ever knew in the US military (hubby is retired USAF) was a young guy, he married a 'friend' to get a GC and then joined up....Don't think your wife would appreciate you doing that though:lol:
