Right - but the green choice is still the Prius. Manufacturing accounts for approximately 10 percent of the energy consumed by an automobile during its life cycle. Gas burned by the engine makes up almost everything else. So if a 1993 Corolla gets 27.5 miles per gallon and a 2006 Prius gets 55 mpg, you should earn back the energy "investment" that went into making the hybrid in about four years. Additionally, by purchasing a Prius, you help tilt the economies of scale in favor of hybrids. Toyota's hybrid technology is still relatively expensive, but production costs will come down as more Priuses are sold. And the more Priuses that fill the roads, the more consumers will view them as a legitimate option for their next car, rather than just trendy eco-boxes for Hollywood do-gooders...."

So how green do you think you are over here? More so than back in blighty? Or don't you care?

We plan to excahnge our car next year for a hybrid - not necessarily the Prius though - there are one or two others available, or will be soon I think.
How green am I over here? Well they don't seem to know the meaning of "green" where I live. No re-cycling facilities. I'm a bit of a tree-hugger, so this upsets me! We attended the local meeting where prospective Town Mayors answered questions from residents, and we asked if they'd consider establishing a re-cycling programme in the town. They each payed lip-service to the idea, but so far . ....nothing!
I buy casual shirts and tops from Goodwill - that's a form of re-cycling. I buy books second-hand on e-bay and from second-hand bookshops. We buy odds and ends at garage sales.
That's about it, I'm afraid.
Back in Yorkshire re-cycling of newspapers, which I think is VERY important, was a way of life - via the dustbinmen.
I didn't have a car for the last 5 years I lived in the UK, used public transport or walked.
So no - I'm not as green as I used to be (but I'm still cabbage-looking)

Re: How can I be more green?
recycling round here is a joke. We used to have a kerbside recycling pick up once a week that took pretty much everything. COntractor has changed, now we can only do cardboard, nonglossy paper and #1 or #2 plastic......
We have one tiny little bin for it, and if it happens to overflow (which is easy) they just leave it by the road. If boxes aren't flattened, they get left by the road. And perhaps the worst thing is that the regular gargage truck comes round before the recycling, and they often take the lot!!
According to a Houston Chronicle article a while ago one of the most efficient recyclers is a little old mexican lady who was next to destitute not so long ago, and used to use a shopping trolley to collect the empties from behind restaurants - she's built it up to a 3 truck business!! Good for her!!
To answer your question - way, way less green here - more gas, more power, less recycling....worse on just about any score you can think
