Well, I can't say it fits my (amateur) opinion of what central PA would look like, but in fairness there's not a whole lot to go on in the picture! Does the ground in central PA NEVER get dry like this ? No drought conditions ever? I've only passed through central PA once, back in circa 1980 and I seem to recall lush greenery ...

Wow - you really do never see any dryness, do you! https://www.usclimatedata.com/climat...tates/uspa2543

So what's your post about - installing metal roofs at some friend or family member's house in the South West?

I love Adobe style ...

Yup, it's mostly covered in trees! …. Unlike the picture in #1364, which looks like it was taken on Mars!

Last year in State College we certainly didn't get dry in the summer as you can see from our local rainfall data on Accuweather:
Actual Normal Departure
June 5.40 in 4.11 in +1.29 in
July 9.51 in 3.52 in +5.99 in
August 7.48 in 3.84 in +3.64 in
3 Month Total 22.39 in 11.47 in +10.92 in

And this is the view from our window in PA winter and summer!

Our house we were working on is in the boot heel of New Mexico, we are reclaiming the USA by very small fractions

Recalling prior posts by the Q family, and not to be a spoiler, but I recall it's not a family member's, but theirs!

Edit: And now I see that Lizzy has given the location!

Wow - 9.5" in one month! Scottsdale, where I hang my hat some of the time, gets an average of 10" all year ... and that includes some big-ass, flood-inducing storms during the 'monsoon' season in July/August!

Boot heel - is that the area close to Antelope Wells, south-west corner of the state? I've done a road-trip through Bisbee and Sierra Vista (on the AZ side of the fence) and it was lovely around there. I also took a road trip further north within NM; would love to take another such trip.

Wrong again 😁, Mars would also be covered in trees https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars,_Pennsylvania

Extract from an exchange of texts with Mrs P:

Mrs P: The dishwasher is not working. No power. Tried turning the breaker on and off.

Pulaski: Symptoms?

Mrs P: Last night set it to go, heard it, walked away. This morning opened it …. discovered it hadn't run. So I tried to get it going. No response to any button. Seems to be a power failure. I wonder if the leak from the freezer got over there and caused a short.

Pulaski: There is no wiring under the floor, so no short. Are any other outlets not working?

Mrs P: I wonder if almost 7 years is its life span. [It only took Mrs P 3 minutes from my first response to bring up the subject of buying a new one!]

Pulaski: By far most likely is the breaker tripped, or GFCI.

Mrs P: Tested the iron in the outlet above it ….it works, but the dishwasher is on its own breaker, which as I said, I tried resetting. Going dead seems to be the best description …. now WILL NOT TURN ON. So are we calling a repair man or shopping for a new one?

Pulaski: Is it on one of the switches to the left of the stove?

Mrs P: No, it's not on a switch. It has its own breaker. The lights and outlet are on a different breaker.

Pulaski: I think it is hooked into to a socket under the sink, behind the bins, unless I am confused. Does that work?

Mrs P: Not sure, I will take a look.

Pulaski: If something hard-wired in appears "dead" you have to determine if it has power. I don't expect you to open the connector box and test the wires but if we can't fathom out what is going on I will probably have to do that.

Mrs P: There is no switch, outlet, or junction box under the sink. I think it is hard wired in at the back, somewhere in the wall.

Pulaski: The connection is at the front, behind the toe-kick.

Mrs P: I think you'll have to pull it out to check the electrical connection.

Pulaski: No, remove the toe-kick

Mrs P: Well, it has some big ass screws. They won't loosen by hand. And I don't have an electrical tester.

Pulaski: Right. Given that you can't test the power, and it doesn't appear to have any connections on the same breaker, the most likely thing to have failed is the breaker. I will test it with my tester when I get home.

Mrs P: Thanks. When we buy a new one, I think I want a GE Monogram or Profile. For all the appliances. But one at a time as needed.

Pulaski: Monogram, maybe, Profile is their crazy-expensive "professional" range.

Mrs P: OK

[Pulaski arrives home, and finds that one of the switches, to the left of the stove, next to one that controls an additional ceiling light, was turned off. Turning it on caused the dishwasher controls to light up.]

I am still waiting for thanks for repairing the dishwasher. :(

American switched circuits are weird but you are obviously an absolute angel for finding the "fault" and saving Mrs P from having to choose a new dishwasher....

I am sure she was dreading the thought of having to go appliance shopping.

Surely the most offensive part is mentioning calling a repair man?

Honestly, that would have been mine too. My other half would have been fine with that response.
