The geology in Florida is unusual, with high water table and highly permeable ground. Here in this part of NC the ground is solid clay and digging into it is like digging candlewax, literally. You can dig a hole with vertical sides and the side will not fall into the hole, at all, and it can be difficult for a septic tank to drain because of the clay. I don't even know where our water table is, all I know is that I have never dug deep enough to find it despite a having dug down 4-5 feet on at least 14 occasions that I remember.

The only significant risk I would see here is that rainfall could pass behind the pool liner and try to float the liner out, but so long as there is concrete apron around the pool to direct water several feet away from the pool, that problem is unlikely IMO. That said, it is generally bad practice to leave a pool empty for longer than the briefest possible time.

I lived in central Alabama for 10 years where the ground is also clay. God-awful stuff to dig in. A colleague there drained his vinyl-liner pool and ground water got behind the liner ultimately requiring a new liner as it split while trying to re-seat it.

So, while the risk may be low, it's still there.

The pool is concrete. I know it's bad practise to leave it empty. I'm skipping a few corners as I know it's going to be re-plastered and tiled next year.

Maybe you can have Bill sit in it with a pile of beer until you can get the water back in. :)

I've had a pool for the last 15.5 years....

the most useful resource for me has been troublefreepool.com forum. It is brilliant and has saved me a small fortune here.

Balancing pool chemistry is the most important thing and there is no way I will ever trust a pool store to do it.

Awesome! Today I worked more on cleaning my pool. I chlorine washed all the walls and scooped 130 dead frogs out of the bottom of the pool.

On Friday I have a sewage truck coming to pump out the rest of the dirty water.

On Saturday I have a pool guy coming to install me a new timer for the pump.

On Sunday I might be swimming

How long is it going to take for your install start to finish?

Well the digging started last Thursday morning and the pool was in, leveled and plumbed by lunchtime Friday. Our city requires an inspection of the pipework and that happens tomorrow. Once that's done they can finish the back fill and do the concrete around the pool. With luck we should be in it before the end of the month!

Then the landscaping starts - boy did they mess up the garden! Fortunately it was only grass but it was a bit of a shock.

Awesome! I've got my pool filled up today (almost 30k gallons). Started balancing my chemistry and will be running the pump for the next 24 hrs or so.

My landscaping is in total ruin right now - partly due to the lack of a previous owner and partly where I dumped the wheelbarrows full of crap found at the bottom of the pool.
