I just went and bought this one from Harbor Freight https://www.harborfreight.com/electr...ter-64018.html
I can even understand the instructions for this one!
Pulaski, if you'd like the clamp one, happy to send it to you because I never want to see the bloody thing again!

As Pulaski said, RCD's are more sensitive than normal breakers - they protect people, not just wiring or appliances.

Breakers are all Amps based - your lights are on 6Amps, sockets 32Amps, etc. The RCD is 80Amps / 30 milliAmps. The 80Amps protects all circuits on the split half - it is possible to overload it and cause the trip depending on what you have turned on. The 30 milliAmps part works as Pulaski said - it checks the currents in the active and neutral is the same, and if there is a 30 mA difference it will trip in a very short time (about 0.3 seconds).

Most people will feel a 1mA current - at 10mA you can lose control of muscles (hospitals and schools can have 10mA RCD's).

Thank you, but this is all largely over my head . It hasn't tripped before since last summer when we moved in, nothing new added. On that fateful morning I just put some toast on. I subsequently ditched the toaster and got a new one, in case it was the toaster's fault. Hasn't happened again,, but not sure what that proves.. OH is very cautious with electrics due to the icd in his chest

No worries.

Probably the only thing to consider is to go and hit the test button every 6 months and check it trips - easy way to remember is start / end of BST

Marmalade is very good on toast, but it's not Marmite.

Agreed. Not being Marmite is one of the many benefits of Marmalade.

After a year and 1/2 about done with project. Just some staining and sealing left then vinyl floor and stonework. In addition to having concrete trucks come on two occasions I estimate 125-150 hand mixed 80 lb bags of concrete. I have found some interesting patio furniture and have a matching table with four chairs on order. Two guys from North Carolina invented a process to use recycled plastic to make a very heavy and durable wood looking material that comes in several colors. Partially assembled for shipping with large equal size Allen head screws for easy final assembly. Makes very durable maintenance free outdoore furniture.

Wow, it's looking very nice! ..... I'm not sure I would have the patience to hand-mix 125+ bags of concrete. I have mixed concrete in the past, and will probably do so again from time to time, but mixing that much sounds too much to me like resanding hardwood flooring - I know how to do it, and I could do it if I needed to, but all things considered, I would sooner pay someone else to do it, and spend my time doing something else!

Looks great. Congratulations on a lot of hard work that was well worth the effort!
Love the look of the furniture as well
