Help - new to this 😂
Hey folks, my boyfriend has been offered a job in Chicago. All going well, we plan on accepting. My concern is my ability to work when we are there. I'm a beauty therapist in the UK but to my knowledge in the U.S. This type of work is more specialised. Massage therapist, facialist, nail tech etc. does anybody know if I'm over qualified or will need to re train ??
Any help with anything would be smashing 👍

What visa will he be getting, some will allow you to work, others will not.
You will have to be married if you are wanting to move on his visa.

What Mikelincs said (except that you could get a non-working visa, a "cohabiting domestic partner B-2", without getting married), PLUS all beautician-type work in the US is licensed and regulated, so you will need the required amount of training and experience and then take tests and get registered before you are allowed to work. So it's not a matter of you being overqualified, from a US perspective you are unqualified.

Thanks. Yes we do need to be married, HR has confirmed this so I will be travelling on his visa. My main concern was my profession.

Thanks Pulaski. I did think that was the case regarding my job. Unqualified and moving to a new country, yikes.
Many thanks for the info

"Beauty therapy" training is readily available through "community colleges", and at relatively modest cost (you might get charged the "out of state" rate as a new immigrant). But I would imagine that it'll take you about a year to get your licensing sorted out. In any case it'll be 2-3 months before you get the document you need to be allowed to work - you apply for you EAD (employment authorization document) after you arrive, but during that time you could start your training.

Yes, L2 allows you to apply for an ead. Unless you can get your own work visa, unmarried you might be able to get a B2 cohabiting but you can not work.

My post #6, above. If you've read it.
Yes, it's pretty much a given, even if you got married the day before you filed your application.
The B-2, if you're not married, can be a bit more tricky as you have to prove a prior petiod of cohabitation. With marriage, prior cohabitation is not required.

There are lots of beauticians who work without licenses. Here in Miami my wife has a woman visit our house to do hair and nails for next to nothing. I'm sure she's not licensed, she probably doesn't make much either.

Mmmmmm don't think that is a route I want to go down. Would rather follow the appropriate channels and earn honest cash
