head lice

What's the deal with head lice over here? Are they particularly nastier than the Brit ones or are the locals just paranoid? I hear that kids are excluded from school until they are clear and families fumigate mattresses and pillows. Seems like overkill. There was a piece in the NY Times on Sunday mentioning a professional nitpicker who combs them out for $200 a head. Feel I should know more about this before my son starts school. Is your head itching?

I don't have kids, but I have several young cousins who had lice probs. From what I understand it is particularly hard to get rid of it. My uncle had to basically throw away my cousins' pillows and fumigate the mattresses twice. And the school will most definitely not allow your child to attend class if he gets lice - they want to make sure it does not spread to anyone else's child. My cousin got it twice because of getting exposed twice (hence fumigating twice).

In very, very extreme cases I've heard of a child having to get their head shaved to get rid of the little buggers.

When I was a kid the nit nurse used to come around every so often and make us have a public head inspection in front of all your class mates and if she found any would publicly announce it

way hay I see a career path here...what a load of B&^^s fumigating!!!! I'll charge then $150 give them a nit comb, tea tree, bottle of conditioner and a slap round the face, still I am only surprised that they don't call 911:rofl: I've only been here a week and a half and I am amazed at the amount of over reaction on things, (funny story DH has been here 7 weeks now a couple of weeks into his new job he noticed some gel stuff on the flower beds at work and in his previous life he was a scientist wondered if it could be a gel from the labs which he mentioned, within a few minutes he realised that it was moisture retaining gel for the plants which he them started to tell his colleagues his mistake when four fire department engines turned up:rofl::rofl::rofl:)

Well when you understand how quickly a lice outbreak can spread here then the "fumigating" wont seem so silly.

It may be worse in the hotter and more humid states but it happens a lot and is not nice if your own kid keeps getting re-infested just because someone else cant be bothered to sort the problem out on their own kid.

Tea Tree Oil is used a lot here and I would recommend it. Also making sure all bed linen and pillows are washed or replaced is necessary. Teach your kids not to share hats/brushes/combs etc. Lice is not nice!

I agree I did not object to exclusion as me and my brother spent almost 2 years with permanent head lice :embarrassed_smile:due to a child sitting next to him whos parents didn't or wouldn't treat him, but fumigation is OTT washing pillows and cases isn't unless of course they are worse than the lice we know and love:confused: anyway like I said my rate is still $150 and I will throw in a free bonfire of bedding:rofl:
