Have I finally insulted an American about Accents
So I went into a shop to buy my lottery tickets and this is how the conversation went
Shopkeeper - are you from Australia
Me - about 12,000 miles difference
Shopkeepr - so your from Ireland then
Me - Close
Shopkeeper - England
Me - Yes
Shopkeeper - I suppose they have different accents in different parts of England - I'm not sure if she thought people had Australian accents depending on where they lived in England, even though I told her Australia was on the other side of the world!!!
Shopkeeper - I suppose its the same in America, people have different accents
Me - No you all sound the same to me
Shopkeeper - Even people frome the south?
Me - Yes
She looked perplexed as I left the shop I don't think she got my sense of humour

Not sure you insulted her - that suggests some modicum of intellect and specific knowledge...
... will you settle for confused bemusement?

I remember once speaking to a friend where another person overheard his accent. In perfect RP, the other person expressed pleasure in running into a "fellow countryman." "Where in England are you from?" My friend had trouble keeping a straight face when he answered "Johannesburg."

I don't like being asked if I'm from South Africa.

Every time I hear South Africa mentioned, I can't help but think of Spitting Image doing "I've Never Met A Nice South African" from about 20 years ago;

Top tip: Incorporated this in to your life of crime!
When asked if I am from x, I just say 'yes', then I mug them.
Except when x is England, then I just say farewell.
It amuses me to watch the local news, as they say the police are looking for a variety of foregin muggers from all English speaking countries except England.

Re: Have I finally insulted an American about Accents
I was introduced to an American at a party, as being from Britain, and she immediately asked if I could do an Austrailian accent
