Re: Halloween..do you open your door?
Our sub division has Halloween on October 30, and we pass out apples to the trick or treaters, before they go on to drink hot chocolate or cider at one of the houses. On Halloween, they go to the fun activities that are organized locally.

This is an area clearly ignored by gender politics, as I too stay home to hand out, while my missus goes out.

We leave a bowl out, but as we're on a side block, no one goes by, well last year we had zero and the year before we had about 4, just by the amount of sweets taken.
We don't bother stay in as we're out doing the trick or treat until the kids can't stand...that's them sorted for the year with sweets....and then the kids dentist does a buy back, $1 per pound, so they hand in the sweets they don't like and the dentist sends them out to the troops stationed abroad.
We're doing the down town trick or treat this afternoon as the town closes the main street for the businesses to hand out sweets which is quite fun. Then we do the proper one in the neighbourhood tomorrow.
I like the home made outfits best rather than the bought ones, but this year, kids have bought ones, but they've made capes and other accessories to go with their outfits and I've carved the pumpkins, got to wait till it's dark to see how the second one turned out though.

I'd love to open my door, but no trick-or-treaters in this area. I think the youngest residents are two teenagers a block away, who are undoubtedly too cool to ToT in their very own neighbourhood....
There's a popular Haunted House setup on a farm a few miles away, and the gossip is that all the over-12s in town can't wait to go there tomorrow night. Don't know where all the younger children live that fill the elementary schools, anyway not around here.
Nice idea!

I always got the impression that Halloween in the UK was some bastardized version of the US one fostered from watching TV too much. The UK kids having not grown up with the "proper" community spirit of the holiday that I tend to see in the US. The end result being old dears who don't want to be bothered much by it all being terrorized by fireworks through their doors.

My children, having grown up with the benign, family-friendly Halloween traditions of Houston, TX, were quite disappointed in the sour tone surrounding the holiday in England.

I'm in the boonies, and our front door is over 1,000ft from the nearest road across our front pasture. We never get kids knocking on the door.
I volunteer my tractor for the local City/Church hay ride each year. This involves driving my tractor and hay trailer between City Hall and a local Church a mile away. Each having their own event, and members of each event visiting the others. 2 hours off to-ing and fro-ing at 10mph, and because it is a main Farm to Market road, I get a Police escort the whole route - which the kids all love.

I'll probably sit and play GTA to listen for the door while the Mrs takes our daughter around the other houses. That's what I did last year, except I was sat on BE instead. Year before I wandered around with them, our son hung around the drive and handed out sweets before going out himself.
It's supposed to be raining and low 40s tomorrow so maybe we won't have many people around. This is fine be me because it means I get to eat all the sweets instead of handing them out

Compared to my childhood of the 80's, Halloween seems to be dying a slow death.
Every year I notice less and less kids out collecting their candy, could just be related to the high first generation immigrant population of where I was living as well, so it's not based on a huge region or anything but anecdotal observations.
Got my pumpkins carved today, it's one thing I always do. I enjoy it.
I cannot believe how small the candy companies have made Halloween candy now, they used to be much larger, not sure they can get any smaller.

We live in a cul de sac and will sit out with our neighbors chatting, having a couple of drinks and eating pizza. Its normally a lot of fun.

This is the first year our daughter will be going with friends, still in our neighborhood though as we have the most houses and everyone gives out candy. I won't be escorting them, hubs is on duty for that, I'll be at home giving out candy. Won't bother to sit down because it will be non-stop from dusk till 9, or until the candy runs out!
