Shit one. I just flat out refuse to dress up, and thus far it has worked. I get to put my foot down on so few things, I try to retain this one as much as I can :)

I was so inspired by this, I'm actually doing it right now. Thank you

Sorry to mention it, but you forgot New Years Eve & NY Day, Fathers Day, 4th July, Memorial Day, Labor Day. and probably lots more.

I do get sick of seeing seasonal crap months before it's time for it. I don't dress up the house for any of the holidays. Ok, maybe one small flag for July 4th.

Once the Halloween candy runs out here, the front lights go off. You still get some joker knocking on the door though.

New Years, Father's Day Memorial Day and Labor Day don't have a color scheme yet.

Valentine's Day - Red
St. Patrick's Day - Green
Easter - Pale Blue and Yellow
Independence Day - Red, White & Blue
Halloween - Black and Orange
Thanksgiving - Brown and Yellow
Chanukah - Blue and White
Christmas - Red and Green

It's not a proper holiday in the US unless it has a color scheme.

Wait a minute...isn't it only the kids who dress up??? I don't do fancy dress. I hate it. It's up there with karaoke and exfoliating my face with sandpaper...I just don't do it. I love dressing the kids up (because they love it) but it's jeans and t-shirts all the way for me.

Supposed to be but there are way too many adults round here that are happy to make an arse out of themselves.

I'm not one of them.

Wouldn't dare have done that back home, but I wore an orange shirt this year for a larf!

I was thinking this was all a bit suspect. Now I have some confirmation. I may just have to go with my first choice of quintessential Englishman

You've nailed it -- THAT'S the real problem with America. In normal countries, they kill you or shatter your kneecap or something if you offend their ethnic sensibilities. Here, in the US, it's more likely "Hey - whatever - is that what you guys do back in Bongo-Bongoland? That's moderately interesting -- I suppose.."

I thought it was just me.
Something really smug about being subversive, when nobody knows or cares.

I think you may be right about the puritanical roots, its funny how it gets so watered down, so that now any old fancy dress is considered appropriate for Halloween.

My daughter will be in something extremely tarty.
